NEW POWER ADAPTATION Mental LC: 10 Adaptation is the ability to alter one's own genetic code and physical structure to gain abilities and properties observed in other beings and structures. For example, when encountering a race with Acute Hearing, the adaptor would be able to alter his own structure to gain acute hearing but only up to the level of the person he is using as his example or the number of character points he has available to spend, whichever is less. For instance, with 2 levels of Adaptation, the adaptor has 12 character points available. But if he meets an individual who has only 2 levels of acute hearing (4 character points worth) and that person is his only example of acute hearing, then 2 levels is all he can give himself even though he has more character points available. Adaptation can be used to gain racial advantages, super advantages, super powers, psionic powers, and Magical Aptitude (but not skills unless the skill is part of a racial advantage). Some powers may require a physical manifestation in order to be used. For example, an adaptor can observe a bird and give himself the power of flight, but his arms would transform into wings when he gave himself the power. Each level of power gives the adaptor 6 character points to put into abilities. The skill level determines the number of abilities the adaptor can have "on file." For example, with 10 levels of power and a 15 skill, the adaptor has a total of 60 character points available and can have a "catalog" of 15 abilities. He encounters an An Phar (see GURPS Aliens) and realizes it has acute hearing (+2 Acute Hearing as a racial advantage and another +1 as a personal advantage). He puts the acute hearing into his "files." Then he encounters the super hero, Flamin' Jane (see GURPS Supers). He sees her ability to neutralize fire and adds it to his "files." He can add the power and the Increased Area enhancement to his files, as these are part of her genetic code, but he would have to learn the skill on his own. He now has used 2 of his "file slots" and can still add 13 more slots (until he increases his skill level). It will require 28 character points to use the neutralize fire power and 6 character points to use the acute hearing so he can manifest both of them at the same time. The reason a member of the An Phar race has acute hearing is because of the shape of it's ears, so the adaptor's ears would alter to the shape of an An Phar's ears when he manifested the acute hearing. All that is neccesary to put an ability on file is to observe it. It is possible to file an ability that is worth more character points than the adaptor currently has available. Example: the adaptor files the Insubstantiality advantage. He cannot use it until he has enough power levels in Adaptation to have the 80 required character points available. Example: the adaptor sees someone who has 20 levels of Teleportation. The adaptor has only 10 levels of power which gives him 60 available character points. He can only use 12 levels of Teleportation for now, until he increases his power level in Adaptation. Also, he must learn the required teleportation skills by the normal means. It is possible to "rewrite a file." If all the adaptor's files are filled, he could "erase" an ability he filed and replace it with a new ability. But the ability he erased could not be regained unless he observes someone who has it again and he is still restricted to their level in the ability or his own available character points, whichever is less. POSSIBLE LIMITATION: Must assume the form of the being the ability was observed in to use the ability (-20%) This is more than the restriction listed above. With this limitation, he would not only have to take the shape of the An Phar's ears to gain it's acute hearing, he would have to take the entire appearance of the An Phar. Also, he would have to take the appearance of Flamin' Jane to give himself her Neutralize Fire ability. Obviously, he could not use the acute hearing and the Neutralize Fire abilities at the same time as they require two different shapes. In order to assume the An Phar or Flamin' Jane form, the adaptor has to buy the Morph advantage or some similar ability. This disadvantage does not automatically confer shapeshifting ability. The Adaptation power itself does allow partial changes in shape, such as manifesting bird-like wings to use flight observed from a bird or An Phar-like ears to gain acute hearing. But Adaptation does not allow shapeshifting on the level that this disadvantage requires. POSSIBLE ENHANCEMENT: Number of "files" not limited by skill level (+100%). With this enhancement, the adaptor has a potentially unlimited catalog of files. A skill roll is only required to successfully "learn" an ability when the adaptor witnesses it. After that, a skill roll is required each time the adaptor activates the ability. The number of character points active at one time are still limited by power level.
