Nick was taken and enslaved as a child, becoming the property of Duke Andre of Maurtania. treated more like a zoo animal than a slave at first. As he grew older, it was thought his scary appearance might have some defensive value in protecting the castle and he underwent some training as a warrior for future guard duty. The Duke was a fairly notorious miser, and since luxurious wages by Gargoyle standards are far cheaper than mystical forced loyalties, Nick was freed and given a job at the stupendously fabulous *Regular Wages*. After a while, they decided he was dependable enough and was sent out to do aerial recons of the borders. He was returning from one such mission when he spied the Duke's young bride to be, Lady Paulina, out riding. Her back was to him, and she never saw him. He saw her though and easily saw her put a package into a hedge before riding on. Curious, he landed and looked. Nick couldn't read, but he sure recognized a draft note signed by the Duke. (The duke found it cheaper to pay by check than to pay for guards to protect a payroll shipment.) And while he couldn't make out the amount, he saw a lot more digits on it than those on his own checks. He dutifully reported what he found. The bank draft was forged. It turned out that Count Guilberre, her father forced her into the marriage as a way of stalling his creditors, both as a source of extra money (albeit unlikely) and as protection. However, the Duke's decision to postpone the ceremony (to a month when travel was difficult and he'd have fewer guests to feed) permitted these creditors to press him for payment. Guilberre was summoned. The Duke kept his daughter's confession a secret. Seeing what evidence he did, the count tried to make it look like a frame up against his daughter, with Nick as the person behind it. An illiterate gargoyle, barely able to speak human tongues, a master forger? The Duke laughed openly at that suggestion. But the Count pressed on. Finally, feigning outrage, he drew his sword and attacked Nick. The Duke's men broke it up quickly, but Nick hit the Count once, carving off most of the man's nose. The Duke was not accustomed to violence and came close to throwing up at the sight of the Count's wound. Rather than throw the man into the dungeon as he planned, the Duke summarily told the Count to take his theiving daughter and leave the duchy forever. The Count did, giving Nick a hateful glare as he left. The following day, word had spread, and the bank manager went to the Duke and asked about the other 3 drafts the count had cashed. Count Guilberre is a fugitive. A filthy rich fugitive, but a fugitive nonetheless. But he hasn't forgotten the gargoyle who ruined and disfigured him. Oh, no. He just has problems arranging his revenge at present.
