Indeed many of her ancestors were important members of the local guild, others were people of importance in other guilds or magical business. Her aunt Ryni was something of an adventuress, known as "The Fire Witch". The Teitchford guild was not quite a family enterprise, but it's and the family's histories were well intwined. Rachel's magical aptitude was discovered early on and her parents decided she should become an enchanter. Accordingly she underwent a rigorous training in magic, occultism and the general theory of practical Thaumaturgy. The program paid off. Few wizards master the _enchant_ spell before the age of thirty. Rachel was able to cast it by the age of 17. This technically qualified her for journeyman rank in the guild, and her family's influence assured her of this. The wizard's guild of Teitchford was a prosperous, if small, mage guild. It's members kept to acceptable spells, produced adequate to excellent magical items, paid it's taxes and tithes and otherwise kept it's nose clean with regard to affairs of Church and State. Three events worked to ruin it. Bishop Josepp was sent to run the local diocese. It was a poor secret that Josepp favored a sect that believed all magic to be demonic. Had he not been a Duke's son, he probably would have incurred a more hostile reaction from the Church than mere relocation to an out of the way diocese. Josepp began to give the guild as much trouble as he could without further angering his superiors. This amounted to quite a lot of petty interferences and additonal expenses to the guild. The second disaster came close on the heels of Josepp's arrival. A casting accident brought a demon out of it's extra-planar existence. The demon slew all of the wizards casting the enchantment, which included Rachel's father and her elder half brother Geoffrey. Other wizards in the guild house were only able to harry it a little, and it escaped to ravage much of the area. Josepp used this tragedy as grounds to impose greater restrictions on the guild. With many of it's elder members slain, the surviving guild could do little save submit to these rules. The third event came about a year later. A mystic equivalent of _La_Costra_Nostra_ commonly called the _Crimson_Mages_Guild_ decided the weakened Teitchford guild would be a good candidate for a takeover. Bishop Josepp "rather suddenly" retired, despite being in his early thirties. An influx of new wizards applied for membership, several of whom were experienced and powerful spell casters. All Crimson Mages. In short order, they elected their people to the Teitchford guild leadership. Ryni recognized the new members for what they were and organized some of her adventuring friends to drive them out. Rachel was put into a "special training" program by the guild, effectively held hostage to keep Ryni and her cohorts at bay. The Crimson Mages made use of Rachel's skills, using their prisoner to make minor items. This was a mistake. After one especially grueling day of casting, the mage supervising her lazily sent her to his office to get a book. She did, and found an open scroll tube on his desk. A quick check showed one scroll was for the spell _teleport_. She took it and used it to escape that evening. The Crimsons want her back, both to keep Ryni in better check and because Rachel is a valuable property to them. Rachel is on the run. Under he own name, she's a journeyman sorceress able to work her trade. This makes things easier for Crimson Mage bounty hunters. Under a false name, she's relatively safer, but subject to employment difficulties due to her gender and age. In the last year and a half, she's learned how to live in the woods and haggle over prices. Her ability to write scrolls has given her something of an income as has the ability to make the occasional powerstone or put penetrating blade on an arrow. But there inevitably comes the day when word reaches the wrong ears. So far she's been able to best or escape the thugs the Crimsons have sent but she only has to fail once. Unlike her aunt, she's not really an adventurer, but more and more it seems this is the only "profession" available to her.
