If that wasn't enough to screw him up, his parents were constantly fighting, often neglecting him, leaving him to fend for himself. Looking for somewhere to belong, he earned enough money running errands and doing odd jobs to enroll in a Karate class after school. Martial arts were all the rage in the wake of Bruce Lee and Rohmon was excited to be a part of it. He loved the combat arts and learned quickly, seemingly having a natural aptitude for it. Once having reached black belt in Karate, he expanded his study to Judo and then boxing, loving the great diversity of training. He really thrived learning, and soon mastering, all the techniques his teachers had to offer. He found the confidence and sense of self- importance he'd never knew living in the screaming pit called home. His school studies were slipping, but he really didn't care; martial arts were his world now, a place where he found strength and satisfaction. By the time he was sixteen, he'd reached high brown belt in Judo, could hold his own in the boxing ring, and his Karate was as sharp as ever. Even though he'd achieved so much, he never stopped practicing. Everyday he'd obsess over every move, every technique, driving himself to exhaustion. He'd given up on high school completely and simply withdrew, being legal age to do so. His parents really didn't care and he avoided home as much as ever, barely maintaining a part-time job, and spending every spare moment in the gym or dojo. His parents finally divorced two months later and he was torn away from his home town and forced to live with his uncle in San Jose, CA. This was a stroke of luck he hadn't expected, because here in San Jose he found the martial arts styel he'd always been curious about - Jeet Kune Do. He found an instructor who had been a student of Taki Kimura, one of Bruce Lee's own students of Jeet Kune Do. Having already reached competent skills in the combat arts, the instructor agreed to take him on as a student. In the months that followed, Rohmon entered a new world of training which fused all that he had previously learned into one coherent style. He was entering competitions and doing very well, but never quite being able to win. Whether it was because of a freak slip or because of the unorthodox style which had become a part of him (which the judges never quite appreciated), he never won a single competition. It was always a close second or third place finish. Undaunted, Rohmon continued his training in Jeet Kune Do and by age 20, he was not one to pick a fight with. It was at this time he decided to go bald. He'd seen an actor somewhere who was bald as a melon with hawklike eyebrows and a real cool accent, and he liked the look. Often times he'd practice in the city park without even noticing the occassional strange looks he got. Life was good. Not only was he at his prime, but he'd also found the courage to go back to school and at least get his G.E.D. ============================================================================== That's the basics of how he came to be what he is today, except one minor detail. Like, for instance, how did someone who grew up in the 70's on real Earth come to end up in a fastasy medieval setting that he currently lives in? It's simple really -- I played him in Dark Arena (GURPS Martial Arts Adventures) where, due to his bad luck, he got (a) knocked out, (b) swallowed by a rift in the space-time continum, and (c) plopped into our TL3 fantasy setting. See? That's believable, right? Actually, what happened was I got all excited when we got Martial Arts and immediately adapted Rohmon from the piddly 100 point Man to Man character that he currently was to a 250 point full-fledged martial artist of Jeet Kune Do. The significance that Rohmon was living in TL3 and I had just given him a style that wasn't even invented until TL7 didn't hit me until weeks after I'd created him. So, the group that I played with and myself came up with the air-tight explanation above to account for this serious error in following time lines. Anyway, this is Rohmon, one of my wish-fulfullment characters. Enjoy.
