Character Name: Ruthven Lucifuge Description: Ifrit Mage Copyright (c) 1995 by Brandi Weed Ruthven is a character from a high-pointage Fantasy campaign where a higher (in fact, unlimited) amount of disads were provided, so he is a 250-point character with 65 points of disads. This is in fact slightly revised from the original, who had a few more advantages and disadvantages; it'd probably take a lot of revising to get this character down lower. (He'd make an interesting NPC, though.) The Ifrit is a race that was originally intended for Fantasy Folk, but which was snipped and put into Roleplayer #20. For those who don't have the race template, here it is: Cost: 95 points +2 to *all* stats (80 points!) Extended Lifespan (5 points) Magery 1 (15 points) Night Vision (10 points) Winged Flight -- Small Wings (35 points) Bad Temper (-10 points) Lecherousness (-15 points) Overconfidence (-10 points) Reputation -3 on the average (-15 points) The original race description is that they seemed to be a rare mutation of humans (Ifrits sometimes mate but usually react to each other at -6; if they don't end up killing each other they'll be fast friends). They are fiery-tempered, sometimes stubborn, often violent, and thought to be at least partially demonic, hence the bad rep. They have small horns, pointed canines, and small wings (spanning 4 or 5 feet), but otherwise look human. They live twice as long as humans, and mature twice as slowly. (Adolescence is a TERRIFYING time!) As mages go, they tend not to do enchantments or healing spells-- they aren't really patient enough for either. [This is a *very* short encapsulation. If there's enough demand I'll see if I can get the original article reposted on io.com.] cost 20 ST 14 Thrust: 1d Swing: 2d 30 DX 15 45 IQ 16 20 HT 14 Advantages: 95 Ifrit Extended Lifespan Night Vision Winged Flight (Small Wings) 10 Magery 2 (1 over racial base) 5 Charisma +1 15 Combat Reflexes 10 Literate 10 Voice Disadvantages: Bad Temper Lecherous Overconfident Reputation -3 -5 Pyromaniac -5 OPH: Eats raw meat & drinks blood -40 Weak Will -5 -5 Compulsive Curiosity -5 Compulsion: Writing down events Quirks: -1 Loves fireworks -1 Is writing down memoirs for posterity -1 Good cook -1 Dandy -1 Plays up "demon" image to scare rubes Skills: Cost: Level: Acrobatics 2 14 Artist 0.5 14 Brawling 1 15 Broadsword 2 15 Fast-Draw 1 15 (Broadsword) Buckler 2 16 (War-Fan) Carousing 0.5 11 Chemistry (TL3)0.5 14 Cooking 0.5 16 First Aid 1 16 Flying 0 15 Knife 1 15 Knife Throwing 1 15 Sex Appeal 0.5 12 Spell Throwing 1 15 Writing 0.5 15 Spells 40 Ignite Fire 16 Create Fire 16 Shape Fire 16 Heat 16 Cold 16 Extinguish Fire 16 Resist Fire 16 Fireball 16 Explosive Fireball 16 Flaming Weapon 18 Seek Water 16 Purify Water 16 Test Food 16 Preserve Food 16 Detect Magic 16 Identify Spell 16 Analyze Magic 16 Light 16 Continual Light 16 Colors 16 Flash 16 Simple Illusion 16 Illusion Disguise 16 Counterspell 16 Ward 16 Apportation 16 Air-Golem 16 Sense Foes 16 Sense Danger 16 Watchdog 16 Missile Shield 16 Lend ST 16 Recover ST 16 Sound 16 Voices 16 Thunderclap 16 Scribe 16 Possessions: Weight: Cost: Broadsword (Good quality) 3.0 lbs. $500 Leather Armor (torso only) 10.0 lbs. $100 War-fan (buckler) 1.5 lbs. $30 Small Knife 0.3 lbs. $30 Clothing 1.0 lbs. $40 Leather boots 3.0 lbs. $80 Backpack, with 3.0 lbs. $60 Change of clothes 1.0 lbs. $40 Basics 0.0 lbs. $5 Blanket 5.0 lbs. $20 Pen and Ink 0.0 lbs. $15 Diary 0.5 lbs. $20 Wineskin 0.0 lbs. $10 Total: 28.3 lbs. $950 Attributes: 115 Advantages: 145 Disads & Quirks: -65 Skills: 55 Total: 250 Ruthven is a travelling scholar who has had several years of learning under his belt (he's 50, but looks and acts 25) and now wants to see some of the world. He's an attractive but somewhat curious looking fellow, very swarthy with dark curly hair, light eyes (hazel-amber) and dark, tilted eyebrows that very nearly meet; his teeth are quite sharp and tend to come out when he smiles. Despite these feral looks, and a taste for food that puts most humans off (though he can prepare it exquistely, usually favoring lots of spices), he has quite a way with the ladies, and will usually show off in order to better woo them. His grimoire reflects both his scholarly background and an inordinate love of fire that was somewhat problematic to his teachers (who would have probably expelled him had the youth not shown such talent). He has also learned several useful protections for a magical traveller, though he tends to think he can fight or scare his way out of a situation (and failing that, he can always set some stupid peasants' huts aflame...). Ruthven is also convinced that his wanderings will be the source of a great epic, and so he takes care to jot down anything that may be of interest in the day. He has learned to draw in order to make note of unusual land features, sculptures, etc. Other PCs may not appreciate the notes he takes on *them*... Note: The war-fan is an invention I made for the Ifrit culture (the original Roleplayer description suggests that there are too few Ifrit to *have* a culture; I prefer to think that they are a race, but rare due to in-family (or in-nation!) squabbling). It's a folding metal fan with sharpened edges; a shield-bash is actually a *slashing* action, doing thrust+1 cutting damage. This can be replaced with ordinary Buckler skill if the GM prefers.
