The ogreish raiders who sacked the town were exceptionally vicious. It helped that the man sharing the parapet they defended was a knight commander, but her own raw fury at the ogres as they tried to scale their tower proved nearly as effective as the knight's skill at arms. When relief troops drove the ogres off, they were part of slightly more than a dozen survivors, who'd generally managed to hide, play dead, or as in one other case, fight continously and hold them off. She had no surviving family. Sir Neal arranged to have her made his ward. He continously bragged about how well she'd fought. This was done as much to make the knights under his command to show as much perserverance as it was to praise her. He further encouraged her to take up training at arms. It gave him more time to be with her for one thing. And it certainly would help the girl defend herself if she needed to. Theresa learned quite well. She proved as fit a warrior as any squire her age & size, perhaps more so. Somewhere during her training, probably early on, it'd ceased being a game to her. Theresa was well on her way to becoming a knight. Sir Neal was probably the last to realize how serious a matter it was. At first he balked at the idea. But he couldn't fault her abilities, nor could he deny that she'd been battle tested, something many squires couldn't say. Reluctantly, he agreed. Despite considerable difficulties due to her gender, she won her spurs. Legally, she is no different from male knights of the realm. Realistically, the gender bias still worked against her. A knight has several primary duties to a liege lord, warrior, messenger, envoy, and agent of that lord's justice. She drew the least popular assignment: Bandit hunter. A fact unlikely to change until and unless the soldiers, both horse and infantry accept her.
