Astronomers Copyright(c) 1995 by Jonathan H. Whitney OK, here's the bare-bones astronomer: Mathematics-12, Physics-12, Astronomy-12; nearly every astronomer will specialize in a sub-field of astronomy, most will actually specialize further, but that's hard to simulate in GURPS terms. Almost all astronomers under 40-50, and most over that age will have: Computer Operation-12, Computer Programming-12 Theoretical Astronomers will generally have somewhat higher skills in the above catagories. Obervational Astronomers will have: Photography-10, and professional skill Digital Image Analysis-12 Instrumentalists would likely have: Mechanic (telescopes and associated hardware)-12, Electronics (same)-12, Many professional astronomers are professors, so add: Administration-10, Teaching-10 Publishing and speaking about one's work is of highest importance, so Writing-10, and Bard-10 would be quite useful. I've tried to give base level skills. Some astronomers will be much higher, some lower in non-core areas. For example, I've seen plenty that can't teach, write, or speak in public well at all. For stats, ads, and disads: IQ is probably 11+, no particular adjustments to other stats in this age of health awareness. Professors and professional research astronomers are usually of comfortable wealth level. A level or two of status is also reasonalble. Reputation to other astronomers (a small group) is important. Mathematical Ability is reasonalbe. Other ads and disads would be difficult to assign, as mostly astronomers are as varied as anyone else. -Jon
