The momenta of the the two sets of projectiles are calculated such that the net recoil is zero. The flechettes have a muzzle velocity of well over two kilometers per second (roughly mach 6.5) giving the weapon a distinctive sharp report as it fires. The plastic beads have a theoretical muzzle velocity of about mach 2, but they are stored in a highly compressed condition. As soon as they leave their rear-pointing muzzle, they expand by a factor of 30. *At the muzzle*, they total one point of damage. Within a meter, air resistance has stopped them completely. Because a burst of confetti in the face will cause the steeliest- nerved shootist to flinch, this hand-gun has no direct sights, relying instead on a laser aim-point. The two rounds are impossible to interchange. The confetti round is 3cm long and 1cm *square*, while the flechette round is only 2cm long and 1cm in diameter. The rounds contain no propellant. Precisely metered amounts of liquid propellant are injected into the weapon's two combustion chambers from storage cylinders in the weapon's magazine and electrically ignited. Each magazine holds eight flechette rounds, eight confetti rounds, and nine shots worth of propellant. (The extra shot of propellant allows the weapon to be carried with a chambered pair of rounds, and permits the magazine to be changed with rounds still chambered.) Note that flechettes are easily stopped, since DR is subtracted from *each* die of damage separately. For example, a maniac shoots directly into the hull of your spaceship, and rolls a 2, 3, 4, and 5. You were cheap, and built your ship with the minimum armor GURPS Vehicles requires: DR 3. Your hull takes (2-3) + (3-3) + (4-3) + (5-3) + 1 = 4 points of damage. The following is the spreadsheet I used to design this weapon according to Guns!, Guns!, Guns!, 3rd edition (3G3), which is copyright (c) 1991 by Greg Porter and published by BTRC.
