Hi All! This little bit of horror is brought to you by the letters "e", "v", "i", and "l" and the number 6. My wife found a really terrifying doll at our local Toys R Us, and for some unknown reason we bought it. It's supposed to be modeled after those collectable porcelain baby dolls, but the guy who designed them obviously indulged in too much coffee, too many Hammer horror films and way too little sleep. Some of our friends have nicknamed it "My Little Vampire", and boy does the name fit. We stuff it in its box at night before we go to sleep, just in case dolly decides to go for "walkies" after-dark. So without further adieu, may I present...The Sweet Possessions line from ToyCorps: Copyright 1996 by Michael Smith Msmith@mfi.com ToyCorps of San Jose, California is a peculiar little company that makes a peculiar little product. The "Sweet Possessions" line of porcelain dolls. Beautifully crafted figurines, hand painted by the many immigrant workers that the company employs. Up until six months ago, the company was doing very poorly with it's "Soldier Sam" series of action figures and its line of dismal games like "Pocket Frog" and "Blindsies". Until they hired toy designer, Hermann Kleinheimer. Hermann was an overnight success with the owners of ToyCorp, and had a charming and winning way with all of the other ToyCorp employees. He's been described as a cross between Jepetto and Santa Claus. He quickly began work redesigning their toy line. Despite the somewhat eerie expressions and unusual features of his toys, they began to sell phenomenally well, one could almost say, unusually well. Oh, there was some complaint from parents and parents groups about the appearance of the dolls, but it was nothing they could pin down besides "creepy". Regardless, the children wanted them...almost, needed, them. Some children then began to exhibit marked shifts in personality and behavior, exhibiting cruel behavior, developing odd habits, and spending far too much time in their rooms playing with "dolly". Sometimes things would get worse, parents were unable to deal with their growing fear that "something was not right", and a brave few "knew" what was the matter. But then, so did the dolls. Several parents died in horrible accidents, others killed themselves in terror. Children were passed on to other relatives or government institutions. But they all brought "dolly" with them, no matter where they went. And while it is rather tragic, all those children having to get on without their parents, at least they have their "Sweet Possessions" dollies to keep them safe at night. Game Mechanics: The "Sweet Possessions" dollies appear to be simple, hand crafted baby dolls, dressed in a variety of old world clothing, seemingly plucked from faery tales. Their faces are exquisitely painted, yet something about them does not seem quite right. Anyone over 10 must make a fright check to avoid a momentary panic attack whenever they look directly at the dolls eyes. Oddly, the dolls have the opposite effect on children, who develop the insatiable urge to have mommy and daddy buy them one...NOW! Once you get the evil thing home, the problems begin. The new doll immediately takes the place of any other toys the child has, becoming the focus of the child's attention. It becomes the child's "special friend", empathically drawing the child into its world. The children begin to become darker in personality, a normally happy child will become sullen when taken away from the doll's influence, and a sullen child will become cruel and venomous. The child will start lying and being abusive on a regular basis. The effect on the parents is worse, little fears become outright paranoia, basically any mental disadvantages become more and more pronounced. This continues until a breaking point is reached, and someone snaps. When this happens, the doll can act, using illusions and telepathic suggestions to cause mayhem to erupt, and deaths to occur. The doll can at this point use the children and the parents as vessels to carry out it's evil will. Good sane people turn into psychos and serial murderers. Only magical forms of detection will reveal the doll for what it truly is, a focus for some form of phantasmal demon. It can only act through illusions, hallucinations and empathic suggestions. The dolls are fairly tough to destroy, requiring either someone with True Faith or magical powers to fully break the powerful binding spells that hold the demon to the porcelain form.
