Copyright 1996 John Jackson, (beolynx@io.com) Moon _Affected_ Magery. Special Effect. Cost +3 points/magery level (18/13/13) This world (Gea) has three moons. For mages with this effect, their first level of magery is tied to the small green moon (Emeraldesce). The second level of magery is tied to the large white moon (Opalesce), and the third level of magery is tied to mysterious black moon (Sablesce, which is seen only as a hole in the star field). The green moon is full every other week. The white moon is full every month (and the green moon at the same time). I use a 13 month, 4 week (28 day) calendar. The black moon is full at the two solstices and the two equinoxes. If you work it out, it turns out that all three moons are full only once a year, at the winter solstice (new year's eve on this world). On the night (sunset to sunrise) of any full moon, the magery tied to that moon is doubled (+2 to skills, etc.). On the day (sunrise to sunset) of any new moon, that magery level is gone. On the night of the winter solstice, mages with this effect and three levels of magery are at +6 to magery, and spells of the enchantment, meta, and healing colleges are blessed on this night in a few ways as well. Those who take this effect must buy it with all levels of their magery or none. Note that, when I say on the new moon, that level of magery is gone, I mean more than just a -1 to skills. It effects prerequisites as well. If you have only a first level mage, there will be every other Sunday night (7th and 21st) when you aren't a mage at all, can't cast spells, can't use mage items, etc. If you have two levels of magery, you're safe, as the white moon is new when the green moon is full, on the 14th, and both are full on the 28th. But watch out for prerequisites requiring a certain level of magery! The converse of course, follows on the full moons. So far none of the PCs have taken the effect (not that I've mentioned the option in over a year or two), but a number of the NPCs have it. I'm not sure if the cost is too high or too low at this point. I consider it a net positive since you can plan to exploit it, and the way my calendar works, its always more of a help than a hindrance, especially past the first level. And like many campaign worlds, the PCs always seem to be Magery 3, or Magery 0 (often with high Magic Resistances).... NOTES: For a world with a 12 month, 28 day calendar and three moons like this, there would be four times a year with all three moons full - more powerful. For worlds with one moon, just increase the effect at each level. Once a lunar month mages are at +6, and once a lunar cycle they aren't mages at all! Point costs might need to be fine tuned in all of these cases to fit your world-view, of course. It may not be combined with Moon Aspected Magery (my recommendation- if you want folks with +15 Magery on the winter solstice, its your planet!). It is essentially an effect developed similar to the Moon Aspected Magery with some subtle but very important differences. The effects don't last as long, but aren't as dramatic in _some_ ways. YMMV
