From mccrarje@cherokee.nsuok.edu Wed Nov 5 21:51:59 1997 Date: Wed, 05 Nov 1997 18:16:32 -0600 From: Jack McCrary Reply-To: mccrarje@cherokee.nsuok.edu To: gurpsnet-files@IO.COM Subject: Vehicles: The "Federal" Express Note: all designs are TL 8 SO-01 Scrambler -Suborbital V/STOL The Scrambler is designed to deploy up to 8 battle-suited troopers to anywhere in the world in 45 minutes. The Scrambler also has provisions for carrying 10 ambulatory passengers and six wounded. To achieve these goals it carries a massive SCRAM-jet, with a After-Burning Vectored Thrust Turbofan provide the acceleration to SCRAM-jet operation speed. The SCRAM jet requires an tremendous amount of fuel. This is carried in a conformal fuel tank attached to the belly of the plane. Due to the high cost of the tank, it is not normally jettisoned. The Scrambler is normally incapable of vertical take off when carrying the fuel tank. To counter this, the scrambler also carries two solid rocket booster pods. These disposable boosters, in conjunction with the turbofans, provide enough lift to give the Scrambler VTOL capability with a half fuel load. In addition to lift, the boosters provide forward thrust in case the turbofans can not provide forward thrust.. The Scrambler normally takes off from a runway, saving the lift boosters for "dust off" at the target. To achieve this, JATO packs are strapped to the fuel tank and the turbofans after-burn downward to provide static lift. While the Scrambler carries a decent ECM suite, it has neither stealth nor IR cloaking. The large amounts of heat that the Scrambler absorbs while flying a suborbital arc would negate any such systems. Subassemblies: Small Wheels (ten wheels, retract into body); two standard wings. Guardian Special Operations Powered Body Armor The Guardian suit is designed to offer commandos limited-duration protection from hostile environments. Hostile environments being defined as areas with high concentrations of small arms fire or NBC threat environments. It has the side benefits of providing a sensor suite with slightly better than human range, filtering of environmental contaminants, and enhanced strength. To achieve its primary goal, the Guardian covers the user with fire-proof ablative armor. Occupant survivability is further promoted with a trauma maintenance kit. Besides the standard coagulants and pain-killers, the unit carries Atrophine and other NBC neutralizers. Since one of the key concepts of Spec. Ops. Is flexibility, the Guardian does not carry a fixed weapon, but utilizes the MAAPS. While this arrangement does allow the Guardian to carry anti-armor missiles, it is not a line unit.
