MAMMONITE "And the land shall yield her fruit, and ye shall eat your fill, and dwell therein in safety". [Leviticus 25.19] "And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties. And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all. And they did all eat, and were filled". [St. Mark 7.40-42] Mammonites feel that most Angels' priorities are insufficiently practical and down to earth. They are no less dedicated than other Angels, but attempt to work through worldly concerns that other Angels spurn as unworthy. In particular, they are concerned with the distribution of goods, services and wealth. REQUIRED ADVANTAGES: Wealthy (or higher) (+20), Charisma +3 (+15). REQUIRED DISADVANTAGES: Due to their close connection to less spiritual matters, Mammonites have become forced to both sleep and breathe (40 points off the Angel Package). CELESTIAL MAMMONITE Much of humanity is oppressed by horrendous poverty. Yet, for some reason, we Angels turn a blind eye to this, and concern ourselves only with romantic quests for abstract goods. It is not that virtue is unimportant, but it is hard for a human to think about virtue when they have nothing to eat. No less important is the need for us to show some virtue. So often, it is easy to concentrate on what the humans are doing right or wrong, and forget to do right ourselves. We should show our own virtue through acts of charity to those who so desperately need it. Stereo-types Apocalypt: Why not try to do something constructive for a change? Bachae: Pleasure is important, but its hard to party when you are hungry. If they really want to help humanity in general, they should concentrate on the comfortless poor. Bhoddidsatva: Nice idea, but it only works for a special few. Its not enough to concentrate on these few when masses suffer. Children of the Crucible: They support a worthy cause, but would do so more effectively if they would only be a little more pragmatic. Fury: Devils. All of them. Justicar: Their concern for justice is laudable, but they concentrate too much on individual cases, and miss mass injustices like poverty. Lamenter: No-one is more compassionate, but too often they concentrate on performing individual acts of kindness. Such acts are no substitute for coordinated efforts to help people as a group. Infernal Mammonite: I know that they, and others, like to think of them as being Infernals, but they seem more strange than evil. Muse: A prime example of how lofty ideals can stand in the way of actually doing anyone any good. Narcissite: These are the ones who have given up the Godly for the worldly, not us! Reaper: Destroying privilege does not, per se, help the under- privileged. Tiamatic: Let's be realistic. You need a certain amount of money to be free. A person without a penny can hardly "do anything they want". INFERNAL MAMMONITE Wealth is the new God. How better to insult the old than to raise Wealth in His place, and to distract his servants from the quest for goodness by filling their time with the pursuit of money? Christ knew that the love of money is the root of all evil, so why are so many of our Infernal brothers unwilling to make proper use of it? Stereo-types Apocalypt: They are only helping the opposition! If you smash the physical possessions, spiritual values will bloom! Bachae: Dangerous. They show humanity that one can become happier without becoming richer. Bhoddidsatva: I believe that they are mistaken that humans might choose nothingness over stuff. I fervently hope that I am right. Children of the Crucible: They have some understanding, but even their Infernals are so inefficient compared to us! Fury: Frightening perhaps, but what kind of Celestial encourages no virtue and what kind of Infernal encourages no sin? Justicar: All they do is reward and punish humans. But to receive a reward is not a virtue, and to receive a punishment is not a vice. Thus, they just make people happier and sadder rather than better or worse. And thus, they are morally neutral. Lamenter: By rights, we should be pals. I don't mind the alleviation of suffering, just as long as people are bad. Celestial Mammonite: They do our work for us. I have no idea why they call themselves Celestial. Muse: Splendid! They have found a trap to capture the few who seem immune to appeals of wealth! Narcissite: Wonderful! They make rotten leaders and people follow them! What more could we ask for? Reaper: Hatred of the rich is just a part of the love of money. The Reapers are our unwitting allies! Tiamatic: The hysterical thing is that they fail to see that people are already free! Humans slavishly follow rules just because they choose to!
