Due to bad publicity following his first attempt to create a working positronic brain, he emigrated to Omicron Theta to continue his work. Initially he created a series of three prototypes which did not function, but later, around 2336, he finally created two fully-functional sentient androids, Lore and Data. Lore was deemed too dangerous by the Omicron Theta colonists and shut down; later he would cause the destruction of the colony as revenge, and escape into space to plague the Federation. His "brother" Data survived, and was rescued in 2338 by the crew of the USS Tripoli. He would later go on to join Starfleet and eventually join the crew of the Enterprise-D. At some point after the destruction of Omicron Theta, Dr. Soong's wife Dr. Juliana Tainer died, and he succeeded in creating an android body into which he was able to download her memories so successfully that to this day she does not know she is an android. Data is unique: the only android ever to be given full legal rights as a human by the Federation, initially in 2341 upon his entry to Starfleet Academy, and more decisively in 2365. The above information on Soong-type androids is based on studies of Data; Lore's capabilities are identical. Soong-type androids are built on a heavy frame made of advanced metals. They possess a positronic brain which confers full sentience, although in Data's case this was without emotions. Their bodies are covered with organically-created materials which superficially mimic the appearance of a human being. They "breathe", (which is actually a function of heat exchange), they have a "pulse" (the flow of circulatory and lubrication fluids), and their hair even grows at a controlled rate. They are capable of eating, although though need to, and despite having no need for sleep, sometimes shut their positronic brains down during recharging to experience dreams. They are also "fully functional" and are capably of sexual relations. Despite all this, their biomorphics are not truly alive, and are noticeably inhuman in appearance, with sallow skin and yellow eyes. Soong-type androids derive power from a rechargeable battery--they only need to consume a semi- organic nutrient solution occasionally, and use their bioconverters to break down human food on the few occasions when they eat socially. Their bodies are over three times as strong and over twice as fast as an average human's. They can withstand vacuum for short periods of time, although they cannot swim and are not completely sealed against water. They can communicate readily with other computers, and possess an interface jack and quantum interface detector to do so. Soong-type androids unfortunately have faulty programming as far as concerns emotions. Lore had only negative emotions, and Data had none at all. Data spent much of his time trying to understand human emotions and behavior, and dearly wanted to be human. Even in the enlightened Federation, there were still a number of prejudices, and Data frequently experienced the mistrust and confusion of other Starfleet personnel. Nevertheless, to the few who bravely tried to win his friendship, Data was extremely loyal. Shortly before his death, Dr. Soong perfected a chip which would confer emotions, and in 2343, Data finally decided to install it in himself. It took him some time to master emotions, and presumably he is still working on perfecting it. Sadly, the chip is unique, and still defies reproduction. In 2366 Data attempted to "reproduce", and created another Soong-type android (doubtless built on a smaller frame) whom he called Lal. Lal's positronic brain showed the potential of surpassing even Data's, but she unfortunately self-destructed after two weeks. Gamemasters may wish to assume that at some time, Data (or some members of the Daystrom Institute) managed to create more Soong-type androids, should a player wish to have an android as a character. It is recommended that they still have to maintain Data's original Low Empathy and Social Stigma: Machine disadvantages. [The cost, for those who are interested, is $753,542.50. I don't know how much that works out to in gold-pressed latinum :) ] Data- Disadvantages: ------------------- Pacifism (Self-Defense only) (-15) [programmed in] Low Empathy (-15) Social Stigma: Machine (-10) Truthfulness (-5) Data- Personal Quirks: --------------------- Cat lover (-1) Does not use contractions (-1) Slightly jerky head motions (-1) Artistic: paints, acts, plays music, writes (bad) poetry (-1) Wants to become human (-1) _______________________________________. Okay, now for my problems: -First of all, try as I might, I couldn't get the weight to come out right. Data should weigh about 100 kilos, and I'm way low. I used the heaviest frame I thought reasonably suited the character, and added some armour (probably too much). Any idea how I can get the weight up? I do want to keep the proportions of his head and body the same; since this works out to about Brent Spiner's real height. -I did _not_ give the Soong-type android's brain Radiation Hardening, since I presume Data is vulnerable to stun from a phaser. Am I remembering this correctly? Should I harden him? -I did _not_ install a radio. Anyone remember if Data had an internal radio or not? I assumed not, since he always uses a communicator when on an Away Team. -I had _no_ idea what Data uses for power. Does anyone? I just guessed and gave him a big battery with an endurance of 6 days. I presume he needs to recharge every now and again, possibly during the times that he "sleeps". Any help that any serious Trekkers can render will fine tune this design and will go to make the next edition of GURPS Trek that little bit better. Share and enjoy.
