----------------------------------------------- - "G.U.R.P.S" Rules For Level-Loving Players: - ----------------------------------------------- Personally I agree with the GURPS no-level system, but occasionally there comes times where levels are needed. For these problems (two such times listed below) I have created the GURPS level system. PROBLEM I: I have noticed that because GURPS does not have any level system and (properly played) GURPS doesn't offer a lot of character points for advanturing, some players tend to be more reckless with their characters because when they die they can just pull up the character's twin brother (same character). Especially if the character is a beginning character they don't loose much except for some treasure. PROBLEM II: Many non-GURPS systems use levels to determine a character's saves, power and so on. Since GURPS does not have a level system, it makes these systems harder to convert to GURPS. SOLUTION: An arbitrary number is chosen to represent each level. I tend to give few character points for adventuring (as described in GURPS BASIC) so I decided to use 5 points. When a character passes a level, he/she is given bonus character points as follows: 5% of total character points - Completely Unrelated Use 10% of total character points - Character Related Use 15% of total character points - Current Adventure Related Use Once again, these percentages can be varied depending on how quickly the GM wants characters to become powerful. For example: Bone Crusher starts as a 100 point character trained mainly in the art of weapon combat. She is level 1. Fighting through a dark cave of Salamanders, Bone Crusher gains 5 character points (for adventuring). Since the GM decreed that 5 points are needed to pass each level, Bone Crusher is now level 2. Electing to use her bonus points towards Night Vision (Adventure Related Use) she gets 15 percent of her total character points (15% of 105) = 15 points. Bone Crusher is now a 105/15 points character of level 2, with the Night Vision advantage. Bone Crusher could either use the 5 left over points towards another Adventure Related Use or can save them as unused character points UNTIL THE NEXT LEVEL (in which case they may be use for ANY use). She decides to save them. Bone Crusher continues on the dark caverns adventure and gets another 5 character points (for adventuring). Bone Crusher decides to use her bonus towards a Character Related Use of Combat Reflexes. Her character total is 110 points (bonus character points per level are NOT added to this total), so 10% is 11. Combat Reflexes cost 15 so she must use all of her bonus plus 4 points of her unused points to get the advantage. This leaves her with one unspent character point. She decides to get a Character Relate Use skill: Brawling. She now has no unspent character points. Bone Crusher is now a 110/26 point character of 3rd level. Bone Crusher continues on through the caverns adventure and gets another 5 points (for adventuring). She decided to start dabbling in magic. Because this is an Unrelated Use, she only gets a 5% bonus which totals 5 points (5% of 110 is 5.5, rounded down is 5). She now has partial magic (1/3 of a level of Magery) with which she can not do anything. She'll be able to add to this start to get it to a useful level. She adds 1/3 Magery to her character sheet and becomes a 115/31 point character of 4th level. Level for any non-GURPS adventure can be determined by subtracting the original character's starting point total and dividing by the number of points per level, ie: LEVEL = [(CHAR POINT TOTAL - STARTING TOTAL)/(POINTS PER LV)]+1 In the example, this would have been: LEVEL = [(115-100)/5]+1 = [15/5]+1 = 3+1 = 4th level NOTE: Do not add bonus character point into character total! The bonus per level increases the incentive for player to keep their character alive. If a character earns 10 points through normal GURPS rules and then dies, he/she looses 10 points. But under the GURPS level system, the character would loose at least 10+2(5)=20 points and as much as 10+2(15)=40 points...On a 100 point character that's significant!
