TL6 Scout Seaplane (Supermarine Walrus) Ver 2.3 Copyright 1996 by Tracy Ratcliff (tratclif@bright.net) The Supermarine Walrus entered service with the British Navy in the early 1930s. Intended as a scout and as an artillery spotter for the Fleet's capital ships, the Walrus also served superbly in air-sea rescue and anti- submarine warfare. Following the war, a few were converted to passenger planes flying routes in the Pacific islands of the Commonwealth. The Walrus was an all-metal amphibian seaplane. The boxy fuselage supported biplane wings, the lower wing attached to the top of the fuselage. Between the wings on the centerline was an engine pod holding a Bristol Pegasus air-cooled engine turning a pusher prop. The prop arrangement allowed the engineer to work on the engine in flight. From front to back, the Walrus had a Scarff mount for a machine gun, pilot seat, an open area with navigator/bomber and radio-operator stations, and just behind the wing a second machine gun mount. The Walrus normally had only one pilot station, but it could quickly be equipped with a second seat and control yoke. The plane normally had one Vickers or Lewis .303 machine gun (7d+1|20|12|1000|4700|16|100) in each position, but could support two in the aft. The guns could be stowed inside the plane. The bomb load for anti-submarine work was one of the following: 2 250 lb plus 8 20 lb; 2 250 lb plus 4 40 lb; 6 100 lb anti-submarine bombs; or 2 380 lb depth charges. Vehicles 1st edition states that biplanes cannot have wing tanks or folding wings. The Walrus in reality had both. Presented here is a Walrus with maximum bomb load and machine guns, and a copilot seat. For an air/sea rescue mission, see the "stretcher pallet" on V89.
