Onno Meyer, 5/1996 Magic Flyer (TL 3) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer Since the last edition of the net.book had no magical vehicle, I decided give it a try. The flyer requires a 5,000-point levitation enchantment and a 2,000-point powerstone enchantment - that should keep the it out of reach for the general population. The flyer is build with TL3 technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet], an anachronistic TL5 airscrew (more expensive and heavy as per V52) and magic. Structure: 400 cf standard light body (wooden), max. load 5 tons (body HT 400), flotation hull (flotation 10 tons reduced to max. load) and magical levitation system. Propulsion: Two 10 KW anachronistic airscrews. Power: Two 10 KW mana engines (DR 5, HT 6). Accomodation: Five roomy and five cramped seats, all open. Crew Requirements: One helmsman and two gunners. Accessories: Cargo ramp, galley, heliograph (DR 5, HT 20, exposed equipment). Weaponry: A scorpion (DR 5, HT 20) in an open mount with 35 bolts. Cargo: 100 cf (and 99.3 cf access space). Cargo Airship "Skycrane" (TL 8) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer The Goliath GmbH "Skycrane" is a cargo blimp capable of moving significant payloads over intercontinental distances. The fuel lasts for ten days - 16,800 miles at 70 mph with 2.33 mpg. The maintenance (4.8 hours a day) can be done by the mechanic listed in the crew. It could appear on the colony worlds of a TL9+ interstellar civilization where settlers need a simple way of transport. The blimp needs neither roads nor airstrips, well suited for visits of scattered outposts. The only sensor is a radar (10 miles). The Airship was designed with early TL8 technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet] similar to GURPS Cyberworld. Structure: 4,000 cf expensive medium body (HT 3,000), max. load 80 tons, sealed body, 3,600,000 cf semi-rigid helium gasbag (DR 8, HT 12,000). Propulsion: Four 500 KW ducted fans. Close Support Gunship "Eagle" (TL 8) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer The Legion Defense "Eagle" helicopter gunship uses stealth and a small target area to survive in a time of hand-held SAMs. Its cerametal might help against light AA guns. Weaponry are a autocannon (it is ver|cr|6d*4|29|15|1 mi.|3 mi.|8|100) that can fire for 150 seconds and the hardpoints that will hold a variety of smart weapons (HVKK against aircraft or tanks, SICM against infantry). The endurance is 150 minutes. At 250 mph, that gives 625 miles and 6.25 mpg. After each flight, 30 minutes of maintenance are required. The 'copter is rated for 1.5 G, in any atmosphere that is dense enough to fly. Sensors are a thermograph (4 miles) and ALLTV, tied into the virtual panorama. Nothing active - that would be suicidal. The Gunship was build with late TL8 technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet] similar to GURPS Terradyne. Structure: 135 cf advanced XH body (HT 525), max, load 6.075 tons, good streamlining, sealed body, three retractable wheels (DR 2, HT 29/58), combat-stressed rotary wing (HT 262), advanced controls, stub wings. Propulsion: 2 MW NOTAR powertrain (DR 5, HT 40). Power: 2 MW MHD turbine (DR 5, HT 50) with 100 gallons hydrox (self-sealing, DR 5, HT 40, fire on 10) and a 25 KWh rechargeable power cell (DR 5, HT 4). Accomodations: One cramped seat. Crew Requirements: Pilot with piloting (rotary wing). Military Multirole Helicopter "Sioux" (TL 8) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer The NorthAm Motors "Sioux" multirole helicopter is intended for recon flights or the support of small special forces units. With an endurance of five hours, it gets 1250 miles range and 3.125 mpg (at 250 mph). After this flight, one man-hour of maintenance is required. Even high-quality titanium armor will stop nothing larger than military handguns. Weaponry is hardpoint-mounted with the exception of a machine gun (it is crit|cr|15d|20|16|1,500|5,000|16|100). Sensors are a thermograph (4 miles), a radar (20 miles) and LLTV. The Helicopter was designed with early TL8 technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet] similar to GURPS Cyberworld. Passenger Airship "Grasshopper" (TL 8) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer The Trans-Sol Inc. "Grasshopper" is a quiet, clean replacement for a light utility helicopter. It can be used where a helicopter would unduly disturb the environment (like a protected rainforest) or where the fuel is hard to get (e.g. on undeveloped colony worlds). The solar panel/power slug system requires no fuel. In daytime, 400 KW are used to power the ducted fans, 200 KW are stored. During the night, the fans operate with 200 KW. In emergencies, up to 500 KW can be directed into thee ducted fans. The radar, the only sensor, has a range of 10 miles. The Airship was designed with early TL8 technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet] similar to GURPS Cyberworld. Structure: 600 cf cheap medium body (HT 750), max. load 12 tons, sealed body, 500,000 cf non-rigid helium gasbag (DR 5, HT 2000). Propulsion: Two 250 KW ducted fans. Power: 600 KW solar cells and 2400 KW rechargeable power slug (DR 5, HT 100). Accomodations: Eight standard seats. Vision: Many windows. Crew Requirements: Pilot with piloting (airship), mechanic. The space-only craft moves 1,000 tons of cargo between the stars. The 60m*10m cylinder could rotate to generate gravity. I assumed that the jumpdrive requires the ship to clear the gravity well of the world and/or is unable to deliver a ship with high precision. For this reason, fusion rockets for 0.33 G are provided that deliver a delta-v of 85,300 m/s (144,860 m/s with empty holds). A velocity of 20 km/s is about 0.01 AU/day. It takes just over 2.5 days to charge the power cells for jump, a time probably spend coasting away from the world. ECONOMICS: Let's assume that the ship makes two jumpflights each month. The crew earns some $25k (plus $25k for healthcare and pensions). The bank gets perhaps $2.1M (compare S82), docking fees are $10k if they hurry, and the fuel is $40k (compare S82). With $2.8M for insurance (compare V180), the total cost is $5M or $2,500 for each ton of hauled cargo. With taxes and profit that might become $4k, ten times more than the lift into space (compare the shuttle). The freighter uses TL19 technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet] with the jump drive and the large airlock from Space. Structure: 150,000 cf cheap medium body (HT 30,000), max. load 3,000 tons, sealed body. Propulsion: Two 500 ton fusion rockets (DR 5, HT 600 each) with four 51,000- gallon water tanks (DR 5, HT 2,500 each) for six hours and six jump generators (DR 5, HT 250 each). Power: A 50,000 KW fusion plant (DR 5, HT 500) and 3,000,000 KWh rechargeable power cells (DR 5, HT 1,600). Accomodations: 20 quarters, no windows. Crew Requirements: Pilot, navigatior, scan operator, com operator and half a dozen mechanics. That allows 10 passengers. Accessories: Compact fire extinguisher (15 units), triple 20-person full lifesystem, radiation shielding, two long-range thermographs (scan 22, DR 3, HT 10, electronics), two long-range radars (scan 26, DR 3, HT 20, electronics), two ALLTV (+6), two large airlocks, three mainframes (C6, DR 3, HT 60 each, electronics), two INS (DR 3, HT 6, electronics), two GPS, 40 units of provisions, five secure long-distance radios with RDF (DR 3, HT 4, electronics), two IFF, six spotlights (DR 5, HT 2, exposed equipment), two laser communicators, three workshops (mechanic, engineer & electronics, DR 5, HT 200, equipment). Programs: Autonomous operation (C5, IQ 10), database (306.05 GB starmaps), datalink, sensor operation (C5, skill 17 or +6), gunner (C5, skill 14 or +4), tactical vehicle operation (C5, skill 16), targeting (C5, +7). Cargo: 75,000 cf (and 27,350.4 cf access space). Armor: 1,000 points expensive armor, F6/500 B6/100 R6/100 L6/100 T6/100 U6/100. Weaponry: Autostabilized light rainbow lasercannon (DR 5, HT 60) in a front cyberslave. Statistics: Cost $140,000,000, design mass 1,970 tons, max. payload 1,030 tons, max. cargo 1,030 tons, current load 1,030 tons, size modifier +9, radar signature +9, IR signature +13 (+19 if moving), acoustic signature N/A. Ground, Water & Air Performance: None. 1,000-ton Shuttle v1.0 (TL 9) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer This shuttle can lift 1,000 tons of cargo into orbit. That happens to be the load of a 1,000-ton jump freighter or 20% of the load of a 5,000-ton starship, but that won't matter if an orbital transfer station is used (The standard way of doing things in a civilized system). With a size of 3,700 cy it is probably as big as shuttles get, four times the size of a jumbo jet. In addition to a crew of two, a team of 5 to 10 mechanics is required to keep the shuttle in operation. 80 man-hours of maintenance are required after each flight. ECONOMICS: With thy payments from S82, the bank gets $52.2M each year, and $5.8 go to the insurance company. I assume that the crew gets $1M, plus $1M pensions, healthcare and other benefits. If the shuttle spends half the time on the ground, docking fees are $340K, and reaction mass is $1.2M. Yearly costs (with taxes) might be $70M. With 182.5 flights, each transported ton costs $400. The shuttle uses TL9 [Dec. 93 errata] and the large airlock from Space. Structure: 100,000 cf expensive medium body (HT 22,500), max. load 2,000 tons, very good streamlining, sealed body, six unpowered, retractable wheels (DR 2, HT 625/1,250), two wings (HT 11,250). Propulsion: Four 500 ton fusion rockets (DR 5, HT 600) with 68,000 gallons water (DR 5, HT 3,000) for 60 minutes. Power: 1 MWh rechargeable power cell (DR 5, HT 8). Accomodation: 52 roomy seats, no windows. Accessories: Compact fire extinguisher, 2*52 man-days limited lifesystem, radiation shielding, medium radar (scan 24, DR 3, HT 10, electronics), ALLTV (+6), large airlock, cargo ramp, four optical minicomps (C3, DR 3, HT 4, electronics), two INS (DR 3, HT 6, electronics), two GPS, two secure long-distance radios (DR 3, HT 4, electronics), two IFF, three spotlights (DR 5, HT 2, exposed equipment), two winches (DR 5, HT 15, equipment), Programs: Database (60.9 GB maps), datalink, sensor operation (C4, skill 16 or +5), tactical vehicle operation (C4, skill 15). Cargo: 50,000 cf (and 6,929 cf access space). Armor: 200 points advanced armor, F5/30 B4/20 R5/25 L5/25 T4/20 U5/30 RW5/25 LW5/25. Statistics: Cost $290,000,000, design mass 678 tons, max. payload 1,322 tons, max. cargo 1,000 tons, current load 1,022 tons, loaded mass 1,700 tons, size modifier +9, radar signature +10, IR signature +19, acoustic signature +13 (ground) / +8 (air). Ground Performance: Speed factor 26, top speed 273 (reduced to stall speed), acceleration 10.5 mph/s, deceleration 10 mph/s, MR 0.25, SR 7. Water Performance: None. Air Performance: Speed factor 96, stall speed 125 mph, top speed 1,008 mph, acceleration 21 mph/s, deceleration 15 mph/s, MR 5.25, SR 7, ceiling unlimited. 5,000-ton Starship v1.0 (TL 9) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer The Terradyne "Colonizer" starship is one of the first results of the ongoing FTL-research project. (The drive should have some quirks.) It is intended to carry 500 settlers and 5,000 tons of supplies onto a new world. I would expect that new settlements are founded by a convoy of half a dozen ships, later reinforcements could arrive in single ships. The reactionless engines provide 0.1 G of acceleration: nothing great, but you can't beat the endurance. The plant fuel lasts for two years, putting an upper limit on the range/endurance. The sensors are radars (400 miles), thermographs (18 miles) and ALLTVs. SUBCRAFT: The "Colonizer" can carry a 1,000-ton shuttle and the reaction mass for seven flights (in addition to the full tank of the shuttle). An additional hangar for 50,000 cf of vehicles is provided, but usually not used. It could carry scouts or escort fighters. ECONOMICS: A starship/shuttle pair costs $530M. With $95.4M credit payments, $10.6M insurance, $10M crew salaries and benefits, $8M for reactor fuel and $10M for a load of reaction mass, a mission time of three months gives a cost of $82k per colonist (equipment might be again as expensive). The ship was designed at TL 9 [Dec. 93 errata sheet] with the reactionless engine, the hyperdrive and the large airlock from Space. Structure: 1,600,000 cf cheap light body (HT 100,000), max. load 20,000 tons, sealed body. Propulsion: Four 500 ton reactionless engines (DR 5, HT 10,000 each) and 200 hyperdrive generators (DR 5, HT 125 each). 476,000 gallon water tank (DR 5, HT 12,000) for the shuttle. Power: 2.2 GW fission power plant (DR 5, HT 2,000) and 2 GWh rechargeable power cells (DR 5, HT 1,200). Accomodation: 600 standard quarters, no windows. Crew Requirement: One shift contains a pilot, a navigator, a scan operator, a computer operator, a communications operator, two engineers and three mechanics, four medics, ten cooks and six stewards. The crew are three shifts and 10 shuttle staff. Accessories: Compact fire extinguisher (160 units), triple independent 600- person full lifesystem, radiation shielding, three long-range thermographs (scan 22, DR 3, HT 10, electronics), three very-long-range radars (scan 28, DR 3, HT 40, electronics), three ALLTV (+6), three large airlocks, three automeds (DR 5, HT 75 each, equipment), six optical mainframes (C6, DR 3, HT 60, electronics), entertainment complex, hangar (for 200,000 cf of vehicles), hangar (for 50,000 cf of vehicles), five INS (DR 3, HT 6, electronics), five GPS, 3,600 units of provisions, five secure long-distance radios (DR 3, HT 4, electronics), five IFF, eight sickbays (DR 5, HT 200, equipment), two laser communicators, four workshops (one each, DR 5, HT 200 each, equipment). Programs: Autonomous operation (C6, IQ 11), database (3,782.3 GB starmaps), datalink, sensor operation (C6, skill 18 or +7), tactical vehicle operation (C6, skill 17). Cargo: 400,000 cf (and 222,905 cf access space). Armor: 1,200 points cheap armor, F6/600 B6/120 R6/120 L6/120 T6/120 U6/120. Statistics: Cost $240,000,000, design mass 14,022 tons, max. payload 5,978 tons, max. cargo 5,000 tons, current load 5,978 tons, loaded mass 20,000 tons, size modifier +12, radar signature +12, IR signature +23, acoustic signature N/A. Ground, Water and Air Performance: None. Corvette v1.0 (TL 09) Copyright (C) 1995 by Onno Meyer The corvette is intended to protect merchanters or screen a squadron of bigger warships. Cruiser v1.0 (TL 09) Copyright (C) 1995 by Onno Meyer This cruiser is probably the ultimate TL 09 warship. Anything bigger is just a fat target without significant performance increase. In a defensive deployment, the cruiser sticks close to the protected area and dares anyone else to come in close. On the offensive, it slugs its way through the enemy screening craft to meet other cruisers in battle. The main counter-warship weapons are the missiles batteries: 12 XH LRGM launchers (IG(prog)|24|exp|tacnuke|2 mi.|1,600|20 min.|+2|12*1/8|12*60). The HVKK missiles (SALH|18|cr|6d*30(3)|40|4,500|5 sec.|0|40*1/4|40*100) are used against ground targets. In-System Interceptor "Daimyo Mk. II" (TL 9) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer The "Daimyo Mk. II" is Terradynes next-generation combat starship. A squadron of these should fry the ISF fleet, and they're not for sale. The only drawback is the short endurance, the reason the Mk. II is called a fighter. The air lasts only for two days. The fighter requires 43.2 man- hours of maintenance per day, barely possible for the mechanics (better do it in the base or carrier). The engines give between 3 G (full tanks) and 9.5 G (nearly empty tanks and empty missile launcher), the reaction mass lasts for 4965 seconds at full power and gives 241,162 m/s delta-V. Most of the armor (CATS - ceramic ablative thermal superconductor) protects the front. Weapons are a laser (it is ver|imp|6d*20|25|20|10 mi.|20 mi.|4|100 KWh), missiles, (they are prog|24|pxp|6d*1000[20d]|400|4,000|1 min.|+2|1/8|1) plus whatever the bay contains. It takes 140 seconds to recharge one shot. The high-quality sensor suite consists of a thermograph (40 miles), a ladar (60 miles), a multiscanner (10 miles), a radar (2700 miles) and ALLTV, integrated into the virtual panorama. The Interceptor uses early TL9 technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet]. Structure: 10,000 cf advanced heavy body (HT 6,000), max. load 300 tons, sealed body, advanced controls. Ground, Water and Air Performance: None. Space Performance: Acceleration 0.4 G. Modified Snarkhunter-class exploration craft v1.0 (TL 9 and higher) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer BACKGROUND: This is the design of of the _Streaker_ from "Startide Rising" and the collection of subcraft. You probably have to know the Uplift books or GURPS Uplift to understand the design. The ship is described as it left the yards (e.g. with a gig and without the niss machine). {number} is a reference to a page from _Startide_Rising_, Bantam Spectra paperback, 1983. THE STREAKER: The size of the ship is not very clear. There are clues {440} that the ship is several times bigger than 40,000,000 cf / 1,500,000 cy. I decided to go for a mere 5,000,000 cf / 185,000 cy, and it was difficult to fill the hull. The outlock size and the picture {0} might justify this. The ship is a cylinder {79} with the "Outlock" in the nose {84}. On top of the cylinder there is the "Bridge Pod". Somewhere are the "Weapons Pods" {55}. The "Dry Wheel" {79} rotates around the cylinder to generate gravity. The crane in the outlock in not "exposed" equipment since it lifts subcraft within the dry dock. The other crane serves the cargo holds. I'm not sure the torpedoes are justified, but if the sleds had them, why not? Without further information, I purchased the library branch like any other C6 computer, but the software budget should cover the difference. The power plants recharge the cells at 613 KWh/s even if all systems are running. The ship can't enter overdrive with a load over 100,000 tons (or a payload over 51,500 tons). I listed two payloads of 1,500 tons and 21,500 tons. 1,500 tons are crew, luggage and equipment, 20,000 tons are water in various compartments (fen _can_ live without it). Some people might ask why I use GURPS Vehicles for a design of this size, but diving ships are not covered in Space. SUBCRAFT: I included mass & cost of one TAASF Gig, one TAASF Longboat, one TAASF Skiff and fifty TAASF Sea-Sleds in the design. Those vehicles have their own entries. The outlock is big enough for a more sleds, but the three spacecraft can only be replaced by smaller craft (e.g. no more than one longboat, but a second gig could repace the skiff). TECHNOLOGY: The technology used on Terragens/TAASF vehicles is a mixture of selfmade and imported technology, but everything over TL9 costs valuable GalCoins. I decided to add 50% to the cost per TL over 9 (compare V52). Unless noted, everything is TL9 vehicle technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet]. I imported pieces of equipment from GURPS Uplift and GURPS Space. Structure: 5,000,000 cf standard heavy body (HT 400,000), max. load 150,000 tons, good streamlining, sealed body, ten skids (DR 300, HT 13,333 each), submersible hull with average hydrodynamics, two indpendent TL12 contragrav units (DR 5, HT 4,000) {178}. Space Guard Cutter "Mercury" (TL 9) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer The Hiromatsu Starship Systems "Mercury" is intended as a search-and- rescue/law enforcement craft with duties similar to a U.S. Coast Guard craft. The improved durasteel armor is useless in a fight. The single laser (it is ver|imp|6d*10|25|20|4 mi.|8 mi.|4|20 KWh/shot) is no real military weapon, either. With full lifesupport and food for three months, the maintenance limits the flight time: 14 man-hours per day keep the crew busy. The design has some reserves, it can operate from planets up to 1.15 G (as long as the atmosphere lifts the ship). The propulsion system consists of a reactionless cruise engine (0.1 G with full tanks and 0.166 G with empty tanks, endurance 2 years) and a fusion booster (initial acceleration 1.167 G, final acceleration 1.934 G, delta-v 988,000 m/s) as a compromise between speed and endurance. The sensor suite consists of a thermograph (18 miles), a ladar (30 miles), a radar (80 miles) and ALLTV. The cutter was designed with TL9 technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet] and has a TL9 reactionless thruster from GURPS Space. Structure: 5,600 cf light standard body (HT 2,000), max. load 70 tons, very good streamlining, sealed body, three retractable unpowered wheels (DR 2, HT 111/222), wings (HT 1000). Strike Carrier "Phoebe" v0.1 (TL 9) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer It is difficult for a TL9 civilization to build a battleship worth the name, and it takes a lot of time. So what to you do if you need something in a hurry? You take hangars for a handful for your best fighters, add big power plants, stick the engines from the strongest freighter in production onto one end and the sensor suite from the best explorer onto the other end, and you have a strike carrier. The engines give 0.3 G (that nearly doubles with empty tanks and bays) with an endurance of two years. The bottleneck are ammo and reaction mass for the subcraft. The sensor suites contain thermographs (40 miles), ladars (600 miles), multiscanner (10 miles), radars (800 miles) and an ALLTV. The weapons are only four lasers (ver|imp|6d*10|25|20|5 mi.|20|5 mi.|10 mi.|4|10 KWh), but they can fire continuously from the plants. SUBCRAFT: The carrier has a hangar for two "Hadley" dropships (described separately), their fuel and ammunition and cramped accomodations for the troopers. Supplies for three additional flights allow two combat drops and two retrieval runs. Four "Daimyo Mk. II" fighters are docked in vehicle bays, complete with four reloads/fuel loads for a total of five flights. The carrier is build at TL9 [Dec. 93 errata sheet]. The reactionless engine, the hyperdrive and the large airlock come from Space. Structure: 1,000,000 cf standard medium body (HT 90,000), max. load 20,000 tons, sealed body. TAASF Skiff v1.0 (TL 9 and higher) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer This is a subcraft of the _Streaker_, a modified Snarkhunter class exploration vessel. If you don't read that entry, the numbers make little sense. The Skiff was the third subcraft. It is just under 20m {84} long and capable of transfer-point-travel. Again, I assumed that the subcraft are similar. Structure: 8,000 cf expensive XH body (HT 7,500), max. load 360 tons, very good streamlining, sealed body, submersible hull, two TL12 contragrav units (each DR 5, HT 75). Transport Aircraft "Albatross" (TL 9) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer The WoodCo "Albatross" was designed to transport passengers and cargo under primitive conditions like those on a colony world. It could be part of the initial equipment of a TL9 colony or be build on colonies with limited ingenious technology. Even if the speed is only that of a fast car, the endurance (100 hours) and range (17,850 miles) are amazing. Obviously, that won't be flown in a single flight, but you can operate from airfields without water splitting facilities. The radar has a range of 12 miles, and the radio can be heard 5,000 miles away. The aircraft was designed with TL9 technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet]. Structure: 1,600 cf cheap light body (HT 1,000), max. load 20 tons, sealed body, three unpowered retractable wheels with off-road suspension (DR 2, HT 56/111 each), wings (HT 500 each). Propulsion: Two 495 KW ducted fans. Power: Two 498 KW fuel cells (DR 5, HT 60) in cheap engine pods, burning 9.98 gallons hydrogen per hour, two 500-gallon wing tanks (DR 5, HT 125, fire on 11) and a 6 KWH rechargeable cell (DR 5, HT 4). Accomodation: 22 standard seats. Few windows. Crew Requirements: Pilot (skill: piloting (twin-engine prop)) and perhaps a navigator. Accessories: Environmental control, cheap mini-radar (scan 19, DR 3, HT 2, electronics), cargo ramp, tactical radio, transponder, spotlight (DR 5, HT 2, exposed equipment). Air Performance: Speed factor 42, stall speed 50 mph, top speed 178.5/147 mph/s, acceleration 8.5/7 mph/s, deceleration 15 mph/s, MR 5.75, SR 6, ceiling 7,140/5,880 yards. Utility Plane "AirCar" (TL 9) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer The WoodCo "AirCar" is a family car with wings. It was designed to operate under primitive conditions like those on a colony world. The AirCar could be part of the initial equipment of a TL9 colony or be build on colonies with limited ingenious technology. A design with similar performance could be build as early as TL7, but it would be much more expensive. A possible variant exchanges two seats for a stretcher to build a flying ambulance. Military variants are a joke - better start with the 'thopter in this chapter. The aircraft was designed with TL9 technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet]. Structure: 160 cf cheap light body (HT 200), max. load 2 tons, sealed body, three unpowered, retractable wheels with off-road suspension (DR 2, HT 11/22 each), two STOL wings with canards (HT 100 each). Propulsion: 60 KW airscrew. Power: 60 KW fuel cell (DR 5, HT 15) with 93 gallons hydrogen (DR 5, HT 40, fire on 11) for 155 hours (that gives 227 mpg and 21,157 miles). Accomodation: Two standard (front) and two cramped (rear) seats. Many windows. Crew Requirements: Pilot (skill: piloting (single-engine prop)). Accessories: Environmental controls, CB radio, two transponders. Cargo: 20 cf (plus 6.55 cf access space). Armor: 50 points cheap armor, F4/7 B3/6 R3/6 L3/6 T3/6 U4/7 RW4/7 LW4/7. Statistics: Cost $9,974, design mass 1 ton, max. payload 1 ton, max. cargo 0.25 tons, current load 0.5 tons, loaded mass 1.5 tons, size modifier +3, radar signature +4, IR signature +3, acoustic signature +5 (ground) or +3 (air). Ground Performance: Speed factor 20, top speed 65 mph (reduced to stall speed), acceleration 4.875 mph/s, deceleration 10 mph/s, MR 0.5, SR 3. Water Performance: None. Air Performance: Speed factor 42, stall speed 25 mph, top speed 136.5 mph/s, acceleration 6.5 mph, deceleration 15 mph/s, MR 6.25, SR 5, ceiling 5,460 yards. Carrier-Battleship v1.0 (TL 10) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer I wanted to build the mighty Star Destroyer from a galaxy far, far away. After a few calculations, I junked the idea, but many design characteristics remain - the major change was from "really incredibly big" to a mere "incredibly big". The carrier-battleship uses two fighter wings (each with 12 Goliath Weaponry "Arrow") to compensate for the weak sublight engines. The reaction mass storage is sufficient for 50 flights each, but that would expend all the missiles the ship carries. The hangars are oversized to allow for shuttles, dropships or more fighters. The ship is armed with point-defense xasers, XH missiles and XH xasers (ver|imp|6d*50(3)|13|20|100 mi.|200 mi.|4|500 KWh). The fusion plants recharge 16 xaser shots/s and the power cell holds 10,000 shots (50,000 using hyperdrive power). The sensor suite contains 120-mile thermographs, 1,800-mile xadars, 1,200-mile ladars, 15-mile multiscanners, 5,400-mile radars, ALLTVs and recon cameras. A cost of about $15,000M for a ship (with fighters and scout corvettes) prohibits the use in all but the most serious situations. The ship uses TL10 vehicles technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet] with the reactionless engine, the hyperdrive, the large airlock and the grav unit from Space. Structure: 10,000,000 cf cheap medium body (HT 450,000), max. load 200,000 tons, sealed body, 40 25 cf full-traverse miniturrets. Propulsion: 50 kt reactionless engine (DR 5, HT 125,000), two 25 kt reactionless engines (DR 5, HT 75,000 each) and 2,000 hyperdrive generators (DR 5, HT 125 each). Five 1,000,000 gallon water tanks (DR 5, HT 20,000 each) for the fighters. Power: Six large fusion plants: 50 GW (DR 5, HT 20,000), two 25 GW (DR 5, HT 10,000 each) and three 10 GW (DR 5, HT 6,500 each). Excess power during realspace ops is approximately 30 GW, excess power in hyperspace is nearly 110 GW. 25 GW rechargeable power cell (DR 5, HT 6,000). Accomodations: 2,000 cramped quarters, 1,800 standard quarters and 200 roomy quarters. Crew Requirements: 2,000 marines, 400 men in two fighter wings (incl. techs), 1,200 crew (including officers). Armor: 60,000 points advanced armor, F6/30,000 B6/6,000 R6/6,000 L6/6,000 T6/6,000 U6/6,000. Cargo: 1,000,000 cf (and 20,109 cf waste space). Accessories: Automatic fire suppression (1,000 units), improved IR cloaking, laser sensors, three 2,000-person full lifesystems, heavy deceptive and area jammers (jam 14, DR 3, HT 25, electronics), radiation shielding, radical stealth, ten advanced extreme-range thermographs (scan 27, DR 3, HT 20 each, electronics), ten advanced early-warning xadars with rangefinder (scan 33, DR 3, HT 125 each, electronics), five early- warning ladars with rangefinder (scan 32, DR 3, HT 125 each, electronics), ten advanced long-range multiscanner (scan 21, DR 3, HT 30 each, electronics), five early-warning air-search radars with rangefinder (scan 35/29, DR 3, HT 125 each, electronics), five early- warning surface-search radars with rangefinder (scan 35/29, DR 3, HT 125 each, electronics), ten ALLTV, 40 opt. microframe TC (in the turrets, C6, DR 3, HT 10 each, electronics), 50 automeds (DR 5, HT 62 each, equipment), brig (50 cramped cells), five recon cameras (DR 3, HT 7 each, electronics), five optical genius mainframes (C8, DR 3, HT 60 each, electronics), two optical genius megacomps (C9, DR 3, HT 250 each, electronics), three 50-ton cranes (DR 5, HT 250 each, equipment), 200- ton crane (DR 5, HT 600, equipment), entertainment complex (10 units), two hangars (for 100,000 cf of vehicles each), ten INS (DR 3, HT 6 each, electronics), ten GPS, 100 neural interface jacks, provisions (4,000 units), 40 secure long-distance radios (DR 3, HT 4 each, electronics), five IFF, sickbay (20 units, DR 5, HT 200 each, equipment), 50 neutrino communicators (DR 3, HT 3 each, electronics), workshop (60 units, DR 5, HT 200 each, equipment). Programs: Autonomous operation (C9, IQ 14), database (26,236.75 GB starmaps), 100*datalink, 30* sensor operation (C7, skill 20 or +9), 140*gunner (C7, skill 17 or +7), tactical vehicle operation (C9, skill 21), 140*targeting (C6, +9). From Space: Ten large airlocks, 200 grav units (DR 5, HT 100 each). Weaponry: 40 autostabilized heavy gatling xasers (DR 5, HT 30) in universal turret mounts, 60 autostabilized XH xaser cannons (DR 5, HT 250) in cyberslave mounts, 40 XH missile launchers (DR 5, HT 75) with 800 HVGM, 200 micronuke HVGM and 200 tacnuke LRGM. Statistics: Cost $12,500,000,000, design mass 180,000 tons, max. payload 20,000 tons, max. cargo 20,000 tons, current load 20,000 tons, loaded mass 200,000 tons, size modifier +13, radar signature +1 (-13 if jamming), IR signature +12, acoustic signature N/A. Ground Water and Air Performance: None. Space Performance: Acceleration 0.5 G, hyperdrive recharge time 48 min. Darkstar Dynamics "Aspen" Dropship v1.0 (TL 10) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer The Darkstar Dynamics "Aspen" uses the engines from the successful light starfighter series in a completely different role. This dropship carries a squad of space marines into enemy territory. The sensor suite contains the best thermograph money can buy (120 miles range), a radar for peacetime use (160 miles) and an ALLTV. The gauss gun (ver|cr|8d(3)|1|15|1,000|3 mi.|20|2,000|0.1 KWh) is mostly used against ground targets - a fighter escort should handle everything else. Since the composite nanocrystal/bioplas armor might resist military rifles at best, stealth is even more important. The dropship uses TL10 technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet]. Structure: 1,000 cf expensive heavy body (HT 1,200), max. load 30 tons, excellent streamlining, sealed body, four retractable skids (DR 50L, HT 100 each), two waverider wings (HT 600 each), vertol lift, advanced controls, responsive hull. Propulsion: Triple 10t fusion rockets (DR 5, HT 50 each) with 1,020 gallons water reaction mass (self-sealing, DR 5, HT 175) for 60 minutes. Power: The engines provide 600 KW. The gun has a 200 KWh rechargeable power cell (DR 5, HT 4). Accomodations: 12 cramped seats, no windows. Crew Requirements: Pilot and copilot. Armor: 1,400 points advanced laminate armor, F6/200L B6/150L R6/150L L6/150L T6/150L U6/200L RW6/200L LW6/200L. Cargo: None, but 90.92 cf access space. Accessories: Crashwebs, ghost surface, five dischargers, compact fire extinguisher, G-seats, improved IR cloaking, laser sensors, 12*12h limited lifesystem, radiation shielding, radical stealth, advanced extreme-range thermograph (scan 27, DR 3, HT 20, electronics), medium radar with rangefinder (scan 26, DR 3, HT 10, electronics), ALLTV (+7), virtual panorama, HUDWAC with pupil scanner, optical mini targeting computer (C5, DR 3, HT 3, electronics), airlock membrane, cargo ramp, two optical genius minicomputers (C6, DR 3, HT 4, electronics), dual controls, two INS (DR 3, HT 6, electronics), GPS, two interface jacks, two secure tactical radios, two IFF, two terrain-following radars, two neutrino communicators (DR 3, HT 3, electronics). Programs: Autonomous operation (C6, IQ 11), database (307.4 GB recognition guides), datalink, sensor operation (C6, skill 19 or +9), gunner (C5, skill 15 or +5), tactical vehicle operation (C6, skill 18), targeting (C5, +8). Weaponry: Light gauss gun (DR 5, HT 10) with 2,000 rounds in a cyberslave. Statistics: Cost $20,000,000, design mass 13 tons, max. payload 17 tons, current load 2 tons, loaded mass 15 tons, size modifier +5, radar isgnature -7, IR signature +6, acoustic signature +7. Darkstar Dynamics "Nightwing" Starfighter/Bomber v1.0b (TL 10) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer The Darkstar Dynamics Nightwing uses many components of the Stardragon, but technically it is no variant. Many internal components have been redesigned to make room for a 35-cf weapon bay. The gun is now a mere light gatling xaser (ver|imp|6d*5(2)|0|20|4,500|13,500|4|1,000 shots @ 2 KWh). The sensor suite contains a 54-mile thermograph, a 180-mile xadar and an ALLTV. The small weapon load (usually two medium and three heavy missiles) is disappointing, but you can't expect a fighter to turn into a strategic bomber. The Nightwing can use bays build for Stardragons, and that helps to compensate for other shortcomings. The fighter uses TL10 technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet]. Structure: 500 cf advanced heavy body (HT 800), max. load 15 tons, radical streamlining, sealed body, three retractable unpowered wheels (DR 2, HT 45/89), combat-stressed waverider wings (HT 400), advanced controls and 2D vectored thrust. Propulsion: Three 10t fusion rockets (DR 5, HT 50 each) with 1,020 gallons water (DR 5, HT 175) for 60 minutes). Power: 2 MWh rechargeable power cell (DR 5, HT 12), 600 KW from the engines. Excess power is 575 KWh. Accomodations: One standard seat with few armored windows. Crew Requirements: Pilot. Armor: 900 points advanced laminate armor, F6/200L B6/60L R6/100L L6/100L T6/80L U6/120L RW6/120L LW6/120L. Cargo: None, but 18.3 cf waste space. Accessories: Discharger, ejection seat, compact fire extinguisher, improved IR cloaking, laser sensors, 24h limited lifesystem, radiation shielding, radical stealth, womb seat, advanced long-range thermograph (scan 25, DR 3, HT 10, electronics), advanced long-range xadar with rangefinder (scan 27, DR 3, HT 20, electronics), ALLTV (+7), virtual panorama, HUDWAC with pupil scanner, optical genius minicomp (C6, DR 3, HT 4, electronics), INS (DR 3, HT 6, electronics), GPS, interface jack, two secure tactical radios, two IFF, terrain-following radar. Programs: Database (756.25 GB recognition guide), datalink, sensor operation (C5, skill 18 or +7), gunner (C5, skill 15 or +5), tactical vehicle operation (C6, skill 18), targeting (C5, +8). Weaponry: Autostabilized light gatling xaser (DR 5, HT 12) and a 35-cf weapon bay. Statistics: Cost $36,000,000, design mass 9.3 tons, max. payload 5.7 tons, current load 0.7 tons, loaded mass 10 tons, size modifier +4, radar signature -7, IR signature +5, acoustic signature +7/+9. Ground Performance: Speed factor 26, top speed 370.5 mph (reduced to stall speed), acceleration 14.25 mph/s, deceleration 10 mph/s, MR 0.5, SR 4. Water Performance: None. Air Performance: Speed factor 208, stall speed 40 mph, top speed 2,964 mph, acceleration 28.5 mph/s, deceleration 10 mph/s, MR 14.5, SR 5, ceiling unlimited. Space Performance: Acceleration between 3 G and 6.5 G (nearly empty tanks). Delta-V just over 145 km/s or 4.1 G*hours. Darkstar Dynamics "Stardragon" Starfighter v1.0 (TL 10) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer The Darkstar Dynamics Stardragon is a comparatively small starfighter. It carries a xaser (ver|imp|6d*7(2)|10|20|4 mi.|10 mi.|4|500 shots @ 10 KWh) for use against other fighters or lightly armored merchanters. For battles against capital ships, doctrine calls for nuclear missiles - in reality, Stardragons run or die. The lightweight sensor suite contains a 54-mile thermograph, a 180-mile xadar and an ALLTV. The Stardragon has the unfortunate tendency to run out xaser power at the most embarrassing time, but a serious power plant would slow it down. The fighter uses TL10 technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet]. Structure: 500 cf advanced heavy body (HT 800), max. load 15 tons, radical streamlining, sealed body, three retractable unpowered wheels (DR 2, HT 45/89), combat-stressed waverider wings (HT 400), advanced controls and 2D vectored thrust. Propulsion: Three 10t fusion rockets (DR 5, HT 50 each) with 1,020 gallons water (DR 5, HT 175) for 60 minutes). Power: 5 MWh rechargeable power cell (DR 5, HT 20), 600 KW from the engines. Excess power is 575 KWh. Accomodations: One roomy seat with few armored windows. Crew Requirements: Pilot. Armor: 900 points advanced laminate armor, F6/200L B6/60L R6/100L L6/100L T6/80L U6/120L RW6/120L LW6/120L. Cargo: None, but 18.3 cf waste space. Accessories: 12 dischargers, ejection seat, compact fire extinguisher, improved IR cloaking, laser sensors, 24h limited lifesystem, radiation shielding, radical stealth, womb seat, advanced long-range thermograph (scan 25, DR 3, HT 10, electronics), advanced long-range xadar with rangefinder (scan 27, DR 3, HT 20, electronics), ALLTV (+7), virtual panorama, HUDWAC with pupil scanner, optical genius minicomp (C6, DR 3, HT 4, electronics), INS (DR 3, HT 6, electronics), GPS, interface jack, two secure tactical radios, two IFF, terrain-following radar. Programs: Database (678.8 GB recognition guide), datalink, sensor operation (C5, skill 18 or +7), gunner (C5, skill 15 or +5), tactical vehicle operation (C6, skill 18), targeting (C5, +8). Weaponry: Autostabilized medium gatling xaser (DR 5, HT 20) and two hardpoints. Statistics: Cost $36,000,000, design mass 9.8 tons, max. payload 5.2 tons, max. hardpoint load 5.2 tons, current load 0.2 tons, loaded mass 10 tons, size modifier +4, radar signature -7, IR signature +5, acoustic signature +7/+9. Ground Performance: Speed factor 26, top speed 370.5 mph (reduced to stall speed), acceleration 14.25 mph/s, deceleration 10 mph/s, MR 0.5, SR 4. Water Performance: None. Air Performance: Speed factor 208, stall speed 40 mph, top speed 2,964 mph, acceleration 28.5 mph/s, deceleration 10 mph/s, MR 14.5, SR 5, ceiling unlimited. Space Performance: Acceleration between 3 G and 6.5 G (nearly empty tanks). Delta-V just over 145 km/s or 4.1 G*hours. Recon/Spotter Variant: Remove 1 MWh from the power cell. Add one automatic laser designator, two recon cameras, two secure long-distance radios and three neutrino communicators. Cost rises to $36,101,000, waste space drops to 8 cf. The xaser looses 100 shots. Darkstar Dynamics "Timos" Fast Cruiser v1.0 (TL 10) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer The "Timos"-class cruiser from Darkstar Dynamics is used for a fast display of military strength. While it lacks the firepower and endurance of a battleship, it is about as fast as TL10 FTL-ships get. (This assumes a hyperdrive system similar to S89, otherwise the giant reactionless engine is useless.) The cruiser has hangars for a wing with 12 fighters. While these are usually Darkstar "Stardragon" with one or two recon variants in the wing, one or more flights can be replaced by Darkstar "Nightwing" fighter/bombers if planetary combat is expected. The space marine company has a single Darkstar "Aspen" dropship. The cruiser is armed with point-defense xasers, XH missiles and XH xasers (ver|imp|6d*50(3)|13|20|100 mi.|200 mi.|4|500 KWh). The sensor suite contains 120-mile thermographs, 1,800-mile xadars, 15-mile multiscanners, 5,400-mile radars, ALLTVs and recon cameras. The payload is incredibly tight on this ship - some 1,500 lbs per person, including the crewmember and all movable equipment. The ship uses TL10 vehicles technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet] with the reactionless engine, the hyperdrive and the large airlock from Space. Structure: 1,800,000 cf standard light body (HT 100,000), max. load 22,500 tons, sealed body, 20 25 cf cheap full-traverse miniturrets. Propulsion: Three 7,500t reactionless engines (DR 5, HT 40,000 each) and 250 hyperdrive generators (DR 5, HT 125 each). 140,000 gallon water tank (DR 5, HT 5,000) for the fighters. Power: Three 10 GW large fusion plants (DR 5, HT 6,500 each). Excess power during realspace ops is nearly 7.5 GW. 3 GWh rechargeable power cell (DR 5, HT 1,600). II "Deep Space Scoutship" (TL 10) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer The "Deep Space Scoutship" is the core of the innovative new series of scouting equipment from Shinowara Inc., where you can get a complete scout kit for just over $3M. This first-in shoutship goes where no man has gone before, and even if it is unable to make a complete planetary survey, it will be able to tell wether a planet has potential for colonization/exploitation. The ship has reaction mass for one hour, but the reactionless engine operates "indefinitely", and it can keep the scout in the air. The scoutship can operate on worlds up to 1.5 G. In space, the reactionless engine gives 0.25/0.2 G (performances are given for two different payloads). A N-PAWS (it is crit|imp|6d*15(2)|15|18|1 mi.|2 mi.|1|10 KWh) is used for point defense (could be swapped against an assault xaser). The sensors are a thermograph (10.66 miles), a xadar (28 miles), a multiscanner (3,750 yards), an ALLTV and a recon camera. The hold will probably be filled with a "Deep Space Hoverscout" and a "Deep Space Scoutplane" - ask for a discount if you buy all three. The scoutship uses TL10 technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet] with the reactionless engine defined below and the hyperdrive from Space. Structure: 3,200 cf standard XL body (HT 750), max. load 24 tons, very good streamlining, sealed body. Three retractable skids (DR 4, HT 83), flotation hull, wings (HT 375 each), vertol lift system. "Arrow" Starfighter v1.0 (TL 10) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer TL10 fusion rockets have a better output and a lower endurance than reactionless engines. This fact makes carrier-based fighters likely. The Matsai Corp. "Arrow" is a two-seat starfighter. The sensor suite contains a 120-mile thermograph, a 180-mile xadar and an ALLTV. It is armed with a xaser (ver|imp|6d*15(3)|15|20|10 mi.|25 mi.|4|140 shots @ 50 KWh) and missiles (variable, but usually one XH HVGM). The oversized engines allow takeoff from grass or snow surfaces. Life support and dedicated xadar power last 24h, but the engines have only 30 minutes of reaction mass and each shot over 140 uses two hours worth of the sensor power. The fighter uses TL10 technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet]. Structure: 2,000 cf advanced heavy body (HT 2,000), max. load 60 tons, excellent streamlining, sealed body, three retractable wheels (DR 2, HT 112/223), waverider wings (HT 1,000 each), 2D vectored thrust and advanced controls. Survey Scoutship Mk. II "Type 100" (TL 10) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer The "Type 100" scoutship is a part of the fine collection of equipment that is made by Trans-Sol Inc. for the demanding job of scouting new worlds. It carries either first-in teams or small follow-up surveys. The fusion rockets operate for 60 minutes. That is no real problem since they are only intended for liftoff and the final boost into orbit. The scoutship is rated for 1.5 G (slightly better with empty holds) and accelerates at about 0.3 G with the reactionless thruster (depending on the payload). It has nanocrystal armor that might stop fragments and partial stealth, plus a N- PAWS (it is crit|imp|6d*20(2)|15|20|1.5 mi.|3 mi.|3|20 KWh/shot) that could be swapped against a xaser. The sensors are a geophone (16 miles), a thermograph (16 miles), a xadar (120 miles), a multiscanner (7.5 miles), a radar (160 miles), a sound detector, an ALLTV and a recon camera, all tied into the virtual panorama. With one "Type 101" aircraft, one "Type 102" walker and three "Type 103" suits in the hold, a system costs nearly $14M. Couriership "Marathon" v1.1 (TL 11) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer The Tri-Tachyon "Marathon" courier goes where regular freighters don't bother to stop. Even if the name is only a sales ploy, it is a real FTL- capable spacecraft. In space, the courier does 3.2 pc/day. The food lasts for three months. Much less sophisticated than a scoutship, this vehicle is just right for a small party of adventurers who can't afford more. The mechanic is kept busy with 6.8 hours of maintenance per day. Sensors are a xadar (120 miles), a multiscanner (10 miles), a radar (480 miles) and an ALLTV. A N-PAWS is the only gun (it is crit|imp|6d*15(2)|15|18|1 mi.|2 mi.|1|10 KWh). The improved durasteel armor might help against infantry weapons. After a down-payment of $200k, yearly costs will be $360k (credit) + $40k (insurance) + $120k (salaries & assorted benefits) + docking fees, spares and taxes, a total around $600k per year (or $50k per month or $80 per ton per parsec). The courier uses TL11 technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet] with the warpdrive from S83/S84. Structure: 4,000 cf cheap medium body (HT 3,000), max. load 80 tons, very good streamlining, sealed body. First-In Scout v2.1 "Columbus" (TL 11) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer The K-Star "Columbus" is part three of the TL11 scout kit (look for the other K-Star products). This scoutship is designed for a small party of scouts who are in the business of designating sites for further surveys. It can operate on terrestrial worlds up to 2 G (with a marginal payload). The scout does 4 G if flying light or 3.5 G with the listed payload. The ship is about 15m*4m*2m, with a mini-airlock on the left side and a forcelock combined with a cargo ramp on the right side. The tractor is mounted over the right door. The pop turret with the C-PAWS (it is crit|imp|6d*20|20|20|1.5 mi.|3 mi.|3|10 KWh) and the IR jammer comes out below the belly. The cockpit (three seats) has good windows, but the remainder of the ship has only tiny vision ports. Behind the cockpit there are galley, bathroom, a small cabin, the cargo hold and the engine-room. The nanocrystal armor is good against infantry weapons. The sensor suite consists of a gravscanner (2 miles), a thermograph (32 miles), a xadar (120 miles), a multiscanner (10 miles), a surface search radar (120/53.33 miles), am ALLTV and a recon-cam. The scout will probably carry some airbikes (IV.11.1) and/or exploration suits (II.11.1) and some probes in the cargo hold. The ground and water mobility is mostly a joke, but you never know. The scoutship uses TL11 technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet] with the hyperdrive from Space. Structure: 3,200 cf cheap light body (HT 1500), max. load 40 tons, superior streamlining, sealed body , four retractable skids (DR 32, HT 125), flotation hull (flotation 40t), vertol lift, 20 cf cheap full-traverse pop miniturret. Survey Cruiser v2.0 "Daedalus" (TL 11) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer The K-Star "Deadalus" is part five of the TL11 scout kit (look for the other K-Star products). The cruiser is a 20m*10m*3.5m brick with bad handling in atmospheres. It investigates promising locations detected by a first-in scout team. The team should have some idea where it goes and pick a qualified group of scientists. The cruiser can operate on terrestrial worlds up to 2 G. It carries a geophone (32 miles), a thermograph (72 miles), a xadar (240 miles), a ladar (54 miles), a multiscanner (10 miles), a surface- search radar (240 miles), an air-search radar (120 miles), a sound detector and ALLTV, all integrated into a virtual panorama for the flight crew and two senior scientists. The nanocrystal armor might protect against military handguns and the C-PAWS (it is crit|imp|6d*20|20|20|1.5 mi.|3 mi.|3| 10 KWh/shot) is intended for point defense. It carries hangars for one submersible vertol (IV.11.3) and ten exploration suits (II.11.1) and bays for four probes with the size of XH missiles. The mass of the subcraft is included, but not the cost. The cruiser uses TL11 technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet] with the lab defined below and hyperdrives from Space. Two-Seat Space Shuttle "Blizzard" (TL 11) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer The Han-Rhee "Blizzard Mk II type Sc" small space shuttle is a tiny (5 cy counting the wings) multi-purpose vehicle. It can be used as fast transport in urban areas (it can turn on a dime) or as a light scout vehicle. The fuel lasts for 25 hours, life support lasts for 36 hours. With a limited payload, the shuttle can operate on worlds up to 2 G, or with 2 G acceleration in space. The MR exceeds anything a sane pilot would try. The nanocrystal armor might stop fragments. The shuttle is prepared to mount a fixed assault N-PAWS: the wasted space is a prepared cavity in the nose. It adds $5,000/20 lbs and would be crit|imp|6d*15(2)|15|18|1 mi.|2 mi.|1|10 KWh. Sensors are a ladar (16 miles) and ALLTV, both integrated into a virtual panorama. The shuttle uses TL11 technology [Dec. 93 errata sheet]. Structure: 90 cf light standard body (HT 125), max. load 2,250 lbs., very good streamlining, sealed body, three retractable wheels (HT 7/14), wings (HT 62 each), vertol lift system. "Goliath"-Class Bulk Carrier v1.1 (TL 12) Copyright (C) 1994 by Onno Meyer This 100,000-cy spaceship is an interstellar freighter. The contragrav makes atmospheric flight possible, but that will be extremely critical even under the best conditions - MR 11.25 is obviously nonsense. The sensor suite consists of a gravscanner (90 miles), a thermograph (320 miles), a xadar 2,400 miles), a multiscanner (20 miles), a radar 14,400 miles) and an ALLTV. The N-PAWS (crit|imp|6d*50(2)|25|20|4 mi.|8 mi.|3|100 KWh) are oversized point defense guns. I assume that the ship spends one day out of ten in port for loading and unloading, and one day out of ten on refit or maintenance stops. The hold is 75% full as shown below. That gives 8,760,000 parsec/tons every year. Yearly operating costs could be $2M (salaries and benefits) + $16.2M (credit payments from S82 with 12% interest) + $2M (insurance, V180) + $3.65M (docking fees). If nothing breaks down, the cost is $2.7 per parsec per ton. Add taxes, profit and savings for repairs, and the price will be between $5 and $10 per parsec per ton. The freighter is build at TL12 [Dec. 93 errata sheet] with the warpdrive, artificial gravity and the large airlock from Space. Structure: 2,700,000 cf cheap medium body (HT 187,500), max. load 54,000 tons, fair streamlining, sealed body, flotation hull, three independent contragrav units (DR 5, HT 2000 each). Propulsion: Nine 300-ton reactionless engines (DR 5, HT 800 each) and three 12,000-WTF warpdrives (DR 5, HT 4000 each). Power: Three 1,300 MW antimatter plants (DR 5, HT 600 each) and 100 MWh rechargeable power cells (DR 5, HT 100). Accomodations: 100 standard quarters, no windows. Crew Requirements: Each shift has a pilot, a navigator, a scan tech, a com tech, a chief engineer and two mechanics, a purser, a medic and a cook. Three shifts give 30 crew, plus a bunch of shuttle pilots. Accessories: Compact fire extinguisher, laser sensors, triple 100-person life systems, radiation shielding, extreme-range gravscanner (scan 32, DR 3, HT 125, electronics), extreme-range thermograph (scan 28, DR 3, HT 20, electronics), extreme-range xadar with rangefinder (scan 34, DR 3, HT 60, electronics), long-range multiscanner (scan 24, DR 3, HT 30, electronics), early-warning radar (scan 38, DR 3, HT 125, electronics), ALLTV (+9), three large airlocks, three automeds (DR 5, HT 50, equipment), four optical minicomps (C7, DR 3, HT 4, electronics), two mainframes (C9, DR 3, HT 60, electronics), 61,250 cf hangar, 6 INS (DR 3, HT 6, electronics), six GPS, six secure long-range gravity-ripple communicators (DR 3, HT 4, electronics), 6 IFF, sickbay (DR 5, HT 200, equipment), six neutrino communicators, ten heavy tractor beams (DR 5, HT 75, equipment), four workshops (DR 5, HT 200, equipment), 100 artificial gravity generators (DR 5, HT 60 each). Armor: 4,100 points cheap armor, F6/1,000 B6/600 R6/600 L6/600 T6/600 U6/700. Weaponry: Six autostabilized light N-PAWS (DR 5, HT 60) in cyberslaves covering every direction. Statistics: Cost $100,000,000, design mass 6,000 tons, max. payload 48,000 tons, max. cargo 40,000 tons, current load 30,000 tons, loaded mass 36,000 tons, size modifier +12, radar signature +12, IR signature +17, acoustic signature +4. Air Performance: Speed factor 90, top speed 360 mph, acceleration 8 mph/s, deceleration 28 mph/s, MR 11.25, SR 8, ceiling unlimited. General-Purpose Laboratory, TL5+ A lab like this might be found on exploration ships (first on ocean- going vessels, later on starships). It is the "proper equipment" mentioned on B60. A metallurgist might be able to tell wether a rock contains gold and approximately how much. A chemist could find out wether a sample of water contains lead and give an educated guess wether the water is drinkable or not. $25,000, 10,000 lbs., 800 cf, HT 200 (the same stats as a sickbay). Reactionless Thrusters, TL10 $10, 0.5 lbs., 0.025 cf and 0.5 KW per lbs. of thrust. This thruster gives 10% of the performance of TL11 thruster from Vehicles. With the exception of a 7.4% reduction in volume, it is like the GURPS Space thruster for TL10.
