Copyright (c) 1996 by Christopher M. Dicely Basic Terminal (TL5-6): This is a set of knobs, switches, and lights used for computer I/O before keyboard/printer combinations were common. Basic Terminal (TL7+): This is a keyboard, pointing device, and compact monitor similar to those found on desktop or laptop systems (but the monitor is much smaller than most desktop system, and until late TL7 certainly *not* color). It allows access to any systems linked to the computer, but does not satisfy the terminal requirements for a crew station with primary or duplicate computerized maneuver or diving controls -- it can, however, be used to give commands to a computer using the Robot Brain option or Routine Vehicle Operation to control the vehicle. Control Terminal (TL7+): This is a system with 2-3 multifunction displays (MFD)'s and appropriate controls for them. It can access all sensors and targeting systems and related databases that are linked to the computer, and it is necessary in any crew station intended to access computerized maneuver or diving controls. It is at best inefficient and often downright inadequate for accessing some kinds of software (for example, you would want to use a word processor on it!). Option Descriptions: Compact (TL7+): the same as the computer option of the same name. Compact control terminals only have one MFD, they are common on TL8+ civilian ground vehicles. Hardened (TL7+): similar to the computer option of the same name. Note that protection from TEMPEST gear requires that the terminal be hardened, but the main computer need not be, although for EMP resistance both should be. Large (TL7+): Large terminals incorporate larger and/or multiple displays and a wider range of I/O devices. While these have no specific game mechanical effects, terminals intended to be used continuously for extended stretches will generally have this option, this is particularly true of basic terminals used by scientists or sensor operators or control terminals on vehicles that have no windows for direct vision. GMs may assess penalties to perception related tasks due to eyestrain on characters who work with non-large terminals for extended times without relief. Office (TL7+): This option is only available for Basic Terminals, and includes all features of the Large option plus a printer. Note that this system is pretty much the vehicle equivalent of the periperal system in Ultra-Tech, and has the same weight and cost as that system.
