TNH/LTH/LTP/LTL/LT Vz. 38 Copyright (C) 1996 by James Lowry (jlowry@tfb.com). The TNH was a tank built for export in several variations by the CKD plant in Czechoslovakia. The first fifty were ordered by Iran in 1937, Switzerland ordered 24 of the LTH, and Peru ordered 24 of the LTP variation in 1938. In 1937 the Czechoslovakian Ministry of National Defense called for submissions of new tank designs, offering to purchase 260 tanks immediately, with further contracts to follow. CKD immediately put forth the TNH, and trials were held the following January. The tank performed extermely well and was eargerly endorsed by its crew. The problem with the LT Vz. 38, as the Czechoslovak military designated it, was that the CKD plant was already overloaded with the prior foreign orders. CKD still promised 20 tanks a month, and to start production at a branch factory. Still, the tank was unavailable in September when the Sudetenland was surrendered, and the first nine were delivered seven days after the German occupation of Czechoslovakia on March 15, 1939. 60 of the LT Vz. 38s were given to the independent Slovak Free State, and contracts with Romania and Lithuania were allowed to be completed. An order for 28 LTLs by Latvia was never delivered. Tanks which were based on the chassis of the original TNH were in use through the 1960's. Its main armament is a 37mm anti-tank gun (crit|*|*|no|*|*|*|1/2|1) with AP (cr|6d*4|12|500|1 mi.) and HE (exp|6d[2d]|10|n/a|1 mi) and a .30 cal machine gun (crit|cr|7d+1|20|12|1000|4700|8|100) in the same mount in the turret, and another on the front of the hull. The turret is motor- driven or turned with a hand crank. I used _Leichte Panzers in Action_ by Uwe Feist and Mike Dario, _PzKpfw 38(t)_ in Action by Charles K. Kliment and Hilary L.
