In 1934 and '35 discussions were held to decide on the design requirements for the 'light' tank. Work on the project was started under the camouflage name Zugfuehrerwagen (platoon comander's vehicle), the Panzer III designation not being adopted until September 1939. A compromise was made by the Motorized Troops with the Weapons Department and Artillery for a 37mm main gun, already the standard anti- tank gun of the infantry. However, specifications for the turret were that it would be large enough to hold the desired 50mm gun. The original three models tested out various suspensions, and all had low production runs while designs were finalized. A total of forty Panzer IIIs of the original three models were built from 1937 to '38. They all participated in the Polish campaign. The main armament is a 37mm anti-tank gun (crit|*|*|no|*|*|*|1/2|1) with AP (cr|6d*4|12|500|1 mi.) and HE (exp|6d[2d]|10|n/a|1 mi) ammunition and two MG34 machine guns (crit|cr|7d|19|10|1,000|3,900|15*|50) in the same mount in the turret, and another on the front of the hull. The turret is motor-driven or turned with a hand crank. I used _Panzerkampfwagen: German Combat Tanks 1933-1945_ by Chris Elliot and Hilary Doyle as reference.
