PzKpfw II (Sd. Kfz. 123) Ausf. L/Panzerspaehwagen II 'Luchs' Copyright (C) 1996 by James Lowry (jlowry@tfb.com). While the D and E models were considered unsucessful, development was continued. Eventually the L model was produced in 1943 and was in service for the rest of the war. By this time it was produced it had been redesignated as an armored recon vehicle (Panzerspaehwagen) and nicknamed 'Luchs' ('Lynx'). The hull was widened slightly and made of smooth plates, allowing slightly greater internal room. Initial production was 100 vehicles, and reports of a further 31 with a 50mm gun installed in place of the 20mm main armament, seem to be a suject for debate. The adjusted cost is all pre-WWII even though this variant was developed after the war started. The turret is turned with a hand crank. The 20mm gun (crit|cr|6d*4|20|14|1 mi.|2 mi.|4|10) is an anti-tank adaptation of the normal aircraft autocannon and has 75% cost, and 50% RoF. The MG 34 (crit|cr|7d|19|10|1,000|3,900|15*|50) is in the same mount as the main gun and is operated by the gunner.
