Copyright (c) 1996 by Dave Greenbaum Attached to this message is the first, and simplest, the Panzerkampfwagon I, in a sheet format amenable for printout... The Pzkw IA was designed by the Krupp armaments firm between 1929 and 1933, and was the first "tank" produced for the Wehrmacht in 1934, after Hitler threw off the arms limits of the Versailles treaty. Eventually the tank was up-gunned from .50cal to 12.7mm machine guns, but the tank was too light and lacked enough punch to be used effectively after the invasion of Poland. A variant, the PzKw IB, mounted one 12.7mm machine gun, and had its engine upgraded from the 57hp 4 cylinder Krupp M 305 engine to the Maybach 6 cylinder NL 38 TR water-cooled engine. After 1939, these tanks were withdrawn from the front ranks and replaced by PzKw III's and PzKw IV's, and relegated to training and partisan patrol. As an expedient against the heavily armored French Somua and British Matilda, the turret was removed and a 4.7cm Czech Skoda anti-tank rifle installed in a limited traverse open mount, with armor on three sides. This was known as th Panzerja"ger(tank-hunter). It weighed 6 and a half tons with the same power plant as the PzKw IB. Another variant of the PzKw I chassis mounted a 15.5cm heavy infantry howitzer. This was surrounded by a 10mm thick armored shield on three sides. A heavily over-loaded chassis, it weighed over 8.5 tons, and was 3.35 meters tall. This was known as the 15 cm sIG (schweres Infanterie-Geschutz) PzKw I Ausf. B, also as the GW (Geschu"tzwagen) I fu"r 15cm sIG 33. I will post the GURPS characteristics of this 4.7cm rifle and the 15.5cm howitzer with the next tank in the series, the PzKw II, because I haven't worked out the 3G^3 math yet for the guns.
