Copyright (c) 1996 by James Lowry My organization is a little non-standard here, but I find the best way to keep track of what is in turrets and superstructures is to give them their own "mini-sections". As always, comments and questions are welcome. PzKpfw I (Sd. Kfz. 101) Ausf. A (TL 6) Copyright (C) 1996 by James Lowry (jlowry@tfb.com). The Panzerkampfwagen I was meant (and used) as a training tank. However, Germany's chronic lack of front-line armor units prompted their use in combat until around 1942. Its twin machine guns are treated just like the .30 cal mg listed in Vehicles, unless you have the actual stats for an early German 7.92mm mg, and are mounted so that their fire converges at 300 yards. The author would like to thank Uwe Feist and Mike Dario who wrote _Leichte Panzers in Action_, and Chris Elliot and Hilary Doyle who wrote _Panzerkampfwagen: German Combat Tanks 1933-1945_, which made this work possible. I have used a ratio of 3 DR/mm of armor, which is close to the conversion notes on V10 which generates a figure of 2.8 DR/mm. The turret is turned with a hand crank. The sloping values I use come off the chart I posted a short time ago, the figures in brackets are the 'true' slope of the armor. (BTW, the 18 degree slope should be $3/cf not 4.) The adjusted costs are all pre-WWII even though the later variants were developed after the war started. Structure: 150 cf extra-heavy cheap body, max load 13,500 lbs. (HT 525). Tracked motive system with two tracks (DR 3, HT 87). 25 [22] degree sloped front, 18 [15] degree sloped back, sealed body, turret. Propulsion: 45 KW tracked drivetrain. Power: 45 KW gasoline engine (DR 5, HT 25), uses 1.35 gallons/hour. 2 19 gallon self sealing gas tanks (DR 5, HT 12, fire 10), endurance 28.15 hours. Accomodations: 2 cramped internal seats, 1 one of which is shared with the turret. Vision: Slits. Crew: 2; 1 driver, 1 commander/gunner/radio operator. Accessories: Enviromental control. B Finding the original model under-powered, the chassis was lengthened by 1' 5" to allow the installation of a more powerful engine. Structure: Increased to 165 cf extra-heavy cheap body, max load 14,850 lbs. (HT 600). Propulsion: 76 KW tracked drivetrain. Power: 76 KW gasoline engine (DR 5, HT 40), uses 1.35 gallons/hour. A/B Flammpanzer In an effort to find new uses for the outmoded Panzer I, a number of tanks of both models were converted over to a flamethower configureation. Weaponry: The right MG is replaced with a flamethrower. Statistics: $100 cheaper, 50 lbs. heavier. Kleiner Panzer Befehlswagen I (Sd. Kfz. 265) Over two hundred Panzer I's of both models were converted to this model to provide commander's vehicles. Structure: Turret is removed, and a superstructure is added. Crew: 2/3; normally the same as the PzKpfw I, but sometimes carried a third person who operated the radios.
