Alien Environments Rover v1.0 (TL 08) Copyright 1996 by Onno Meyer This monster vehicle was build for the exploration and colonization of other worlds - no terrestrial use warrants the size and endurance. The giant steel box is suspended between eight wheels. In front a power shovel is mounted to let it build roads if required. The turret in the rear contains a crane to empty the container-sized cargo hold. With thermographs (2.67 miles nominal range), ladars (4.67 miles) and an ALLTV the computers can drive the rover. Two radios and a sat uplink keep the crew in touch with their base. With fuel for twenty days of continuous operation, it has a nominal range of 28,800 miles. The batteries allow air recycling during rests up to 12 hours without use of the fuel cell. The rover is a TL08 vehicle [July 96 errata sheet]. I ignored the power source restriction for full lifesystems. Structure: 8,000 cf standard medium body (HT 3,750), max. load 160 tons, sealed body, eight powered puncture-resistant wheels (DR 4, HT 118/235) with off-road suspension, flotation hull (flotation 160 tons). 10 cf full-traverse miniturret (DR 20). Propulsion: 800 KW all-wheel drivetrain and 800 KW screw (DR 5, HT 375). Power: 1 MW fuel cell (DR 5, HT 100) with 20 360-gallon hydrox tanks (DR 5, HT 100, self-sealing, fire on 10) for a total of 20 days and 1 MWh advanced batteries (DR 5, HT 200). Excess power 109 KW. Accomodations: Eight cramped quarters, vision slits only. Armor: 270 points expensive armor, F6/50 B5/40 R5/40 L5/40 T5/40 U6/60. Cargo: 4,000 cf (and 16.6 cf waste space). Accessories: Compact fire extinguisher, 8-person full lifesystem, radar locator, rad shielding, two cheap medium thermographs (scan 17, DR 3, HT 4, electronics), two cheap short-range ladars with rangefinder (scan 17, DR 3, HT 4, electronics), ALLTV (+5, DR 3, HT 4, electronics), airlock, power shovel (DR 20, HT 120, exposed equipment), cargo ramp, three dumb microframes (C3, DR 3, HT 12, electronics), 2.5-ton crane (DR 10, HT 30, in the turret), INS (DR 3, HT 6, electronics), two GPS, two long-distance radios (DR 3, HT 4, electronics), two commercial transponders, two spotlights (DR 5, HT 2, exposed equipment), microwave com. Software: Database (0.15 GB maps), datalink, sensor operation (skill 13 or +2), routine vehicle operation (skill 12). Statistics: Cost $800,000, design mass 80 tons, maximum payload 80 tons, maximum cargo 80 tons, current payload 20 tons, loaded mass 100 tons, size modifier +6, radar signature +6, IR signature +7, acoustic signature +5.
