Copyright (c) 1995 by Onno Meyer Asteroid Miner v1.0 (TL 09) This ship is more properly a prospector. Despite certain SF movies, the asteroid belt contains only marginally more mass than the remainder of our system, and it makes no sense to move a mobile mining station on a guess. The miner has thermographs (nominal range 4 miles), radars (80 miles) and ALLTVs to find interesting rocks. An unusual feature is the internal spinwheel containing the bunks to delay the zero-G adaption. For long hauls it uses a solar sail, perhaps boosted by laser stations. The miner uses early TL09 tech [Dec. 93 errata sheet] with the chemical rocket and nuclear power unit from Robots and a solar sail from Terradyne. Structure: 2,400 cf expensive XL body (HT 600), maximum load N/A, seal and a 100 cf full-traverse "turret" within the body. Propulsion: 2t chemical rocket (DR 5, HT 8) with 2D vectored thrust, two 6,000 gallon tanks (DR 5, HT 600, fire on 11) for 12h at full power and a 0.2t solar sail. Power: 70 KW cheap nuclear power unit (DR 5, HT 12). Endurance one year. Accomodations: Two cramped quarters, no windows except for vision slits. Crew Requirements: Pilot and navigator. Armor: 60 points advanced armor, F4/10 B4/10 R4/10 L4/10 T4/10 U4/10. Cargo: 37.85 cf. Accessories: Four-person full lifesystem, radar locator, rad shielding, two short-range thermographs (scan 18, DR 3, HT 2, electronics), two short-range radars with rangefinder (scan 22, DR 3, HT 4, electronics), two ALLTVs (+6), airlock, four optical mini-computers (C4, DR 3, HT 4, electronics), light mecha arm (ST 900, DR 5, HT 200, exp. equipment), INS (DR 3, HT 6, electronics), 2*6 man-months of provisions, two long- distance radios (DR 3, HT 4, electronics), two transponders, six spotlights (DR 5, HT 2, exp. equipment), lasercom. Programs: Computer navigation, database (47.3 GB maps), datalink, sensor operation (C4, skill 16 or +5), routine vehicle operation (C4, skill 15). Statistics: Cost $1,250,000, design mass 39.6 tons, current load 0.4 tons, loaded mass 40 tons, size modifier +5 (much more with the solar sail), radar signature +5, IR signature +6 (+13 with the rocket). Ground, Water and Air Performance: None. Space Performance: Rocket acceleration 0.05 to 0.2 G, delta-V 39.1 km/s. solar sail acceleration 0.005 to 0.02 G at 1 AU.
