Coaster (Ver. 1.0) Copyright 1996 by Tracy Ratcliff This is another boat adapted from Dave Serling's _Sea Steeds and Wave Riders_, which he adapted from Bjorn Lindstrom's _Sailing Ships_ (Doubleday, 1969). This is a boat-of-all-trades. In a small fishing village, this might be the largest boat around, setting out to sea with a school of fishing boats around it. In a big harbor, this ship will serve as a harbor taxi, and as a small ferry carrying cargo from the main harbor to surrounding towns. The ship is an open hull, decked from the mast to the stern, and a few feet from the stem, with the rest open to the bilge; the below-decks sections form a small volume of protected storage. The aft cubbyhole is only 2 feet high, and the forward cubbyhole is 4 feet high. Structure: 1,300 cf TL2 light cheap body (wooden), max. load 32,500 lbs. (body HT 800), flotation hull with mediocre hydrodynamics (flotation 32,500 lbs.), 100 sf top deck. Propulsion: One mast (30 feet), 450 sf of sail (PD 2, DR 2, HT 150), 27 KW with 20 mph wind, 4 two-man oars, 1.6 KW with average ST 10. Accomodation: The deck will hold 11 persons normal, 22 cramped. Use common sense. Crew requirements: Four nominal. Armor: 25 points TL4- cheap flammable armor (wood), F3/4F, L3/4F, R3/4F, B3/4F, T1/1F, U4/8F. Cargo: 260 cf aft cubbyhole, 130 cf forward cubbyhole, 800 cf open. Statistics: Cost $16,200 ($1,080 at TL4), design mass 14,340 lbs., max. payload 18,160 lbs, max. cargo load 18,160 lbs., max. deck cargo 2,500 lbs., current load 10,000 lbs., loaded mass 24,340 lbs. (12.17 tons). Size modifier +5, radar signature +6, IR signature +5, acoustic signature +0 (+1 under oars) Water performance [sail]: Water Speed Factor 3 mph, Top Speed 3.75 mph, Acceleration .625 mph/s, Deceleration 10.3125 mph/s, MR .25, SR 2, draft 4.6 feet.
