Southern Trader (TL 3) Copyright 1996 by Tracy Ratcliff (tratclif@oucsace.cs.ohiou.edu) This is a small version of a corbita, a merchant ship that could be found plying the Mediterranean any time from the rise of the Roman Empire to the rise of the Ottoman Empire. The ship has a deck with two large hatches to the internal cargo hold, with a cabin at the aft. The top of the cabin serves as the poop deck, with a station for the steersman. The characteristic ancient Mediterranean stern cruves up and over protectively. The cabin is set a half-deck below the main deck and a half-deck above the cargo hold. The space aft of the cargo hold and below the main cabin serves as additional cargo space in the bilge. I haven't divided the ship up into quarters, since the cargo hold, cabin, and deck all serve as cargo space or passenger space with need. The ship as presented here has TL3 sails and stability. Structure: 7,400 cf TL3 cheap medium wooden body, max. load 296,000 lbs., (Body HT 3,750), flotation hull with mediocre hydrodynamics (flotation 296,000 lbs.), 415 sf top deck. Propulsion: One mast (71 ft, PD2, DR2, HT 355) with 2,500 sf sail, 150 KW with 20 mph wind. Accomodation: No proper quarters, cabin, deck and cargo hold can be used. Vision: Few portholes in cabin and hold. Crew requirements: 9 minimum. Accessories: Galley, 200 sf deck cover (cargo hatches). Armor: 28 points cheap flammable armor (wood) F3/4F, L3/4F, R3/4F, B3/4F, T3/4F, U4/8F. Cargo: 5400 cf (main hold), 1000 cf (cabin) and 360 cf (bilge).
