The Merchant Caravaners The merchant caravaners are a loose group of related families who live by trading among the inhabitants of Durrin. These caravaners do not consider themsMaracarans to be citizens of any one country, and don't seem to mind the high tariffs which they must pay at some border stations. The caravaners are a proud people, and enjoy showing off their expertise with their pack and riding animals. Caravaners rarely travel the same route consistently, since they like to see as much of the countryside as the can. These people are real nature lovers, and rarely stay inside towns if they are able to avoid doing so. Many of the larger towns and cities have built special Caravansary just outside their cities, in hopes of attracting more caravans. The caravaners do use these buildings, but whether or not they attract the caravaners is not certain. The Caravaners are part of what is left of the two nomadic peoples present on Durrin during the Dark Age. During much of the early expansion of Bramhillian and Tashnais, the Geothonnish people maintained their independance, and continued their ancestral travels. The Geothonnish people might have been able to maintain their lifestyle, if the new gods of the secondempire had not vanquished their own gods. A dread plague decimated the population, leaving a fragmented culture and few survivors. Those few who did survive and had the heart to contiue travelling did so. The remaining fragments of the Geothonnish people became subjects of the Triad, and so have been lost to history. The Merchant Caravaners have their own language, but they all speak the other languages of Durrin. Few non-Caravaners realise that the Caravaners have a written language. Although very few Caravaners can read or write in any language, the most educated have maintained the written Geothonnish language. Geothonnish books are quite rare, however, since books and papers are heavy items to carry. Much of the Caravaners history is passed on through oral tradition, a rich tapestry of songs, poems and dances. Caravaners tend to be tall and thin, and usually have long black hair. Caravaners tend to wear colorful clothes, and single pieces of expensive jewelry. They sometimes supplement their trading income by putting on performances in their camps. Lots of acrobatics, juggling and stage magic tricks. Sometimes the caravaners even tell fortunes, but they are almost always vague. Often though, the vague answers do tend to come true. Thonnish Nomads The Thonnish nomads are actually several distinct tribes who share much of the same territory. These people are cousins of the Mercahnt Caravaners. Like the Caravaners, these people also maintain a rich oral tradition, and their own language. However, the Thonnish people make much less of an effort to learn the languages of their oppressors, and rarely follow foreign gods when their preists are not actually present. The Thonnish nomads follow the herds, and since the herds ignore the border between Tashnias and Labhartain, the Thonnish also ignore these borders. Every few years either Tashnais or Labhartain tries to impose taxes on the Thonnish. However, since the Thonnish are hard to find, and have little of value, as well as being rather fearsome defenders of their territories, these oppressors usually give up after a short time.
